A Poor Fit - Impulse Buying

in Three Challenges17 days ago (edited)

I love browsing in thrift shops, and have often picked up real treasures there - from homeware to decor, original artworks, and even clothing with the store labels still on!

I bought an ergonomic office chair a couple of years ago at the SPCA Charity Store. It was brand new and only had a small flaw underneath the armrest. A couple of these chairs were donated by a banking group, all had flaws, and the price was excellent, so I chose the best.

Onto impulse buying - one turned out to be a poor fit - a beautiful Punjabi with intricate embroidery designs incorporating sequins.
Why on earth would I want to buy a Punjabi?

Well, I live in a city that has the largest concentration of Indian people outside of India, so of course I have many Indian friends. I also have guests who book to come and visit family, or for big celebrations. Some have become friends.
I get invited to Indian weddings every so often and this Punjabi would be the perfect outfit. The Patiala salwar (loose pleated pants) was missing but would be very easy to make. I did not have time for a fitting, so my friend measured it against my back and looked like it would be the perfect fit.
Not so!
When I tried it on it was a bit of a tight fit but has a large seam, so there is room for an adjustment.
For now, it just hangs in the sewing room, an impulse buy that has been a bit of a waste so far. I will still adjust it and hope to wear it for the next celebration!

Silicone Rolling Pin Cover

Much to my disappointment another bad fit!
I fell in love with this silicone cover and its heart-shaped pattern in IKEA, when visiting my son in the Netherlands. I forgot that my rolling pin back home is one my Dad made, not a standard size!
It now sits in my cupboard, next to that rolling pin; for sure nowhere near a fit. I will have to buy a mass-produced rolling pin if I want to use this to roll out cookies, scones, or even pastry toppers. Cookies with a heart pattern would look so pretty, just as with LUT's beautiful Polish rolling pin!
I keep forgetting to buy a new rolling pin, it's of course more than affordable, but my eyes usually find something more exciting!

Way too large!

Airfryer

I still hadn't joined the Airfryer fan club, but after all the oohs and aahs from everyone about crispy chips, and crispy everything, I started wondering if it wasn't time I got with the program!
It's summer here, hot humid days, and turning my large oven on to bake a couple of chicken pieces, was such a waste of power, AND turned the kitchen into a sauna!
I thought I'd wait and see what Father Christmas brings as I know how my son's mind works.
But then Black Friday came along. As I'd been researching Airfryers, that's what kept on popping up wherever I went on the World Wide Web!
Aha, Amazon is back and had really good specials.
Without giving it a second thought, I logged on, clicked on 'Forgot Password', and ordered my Airfryer at a much-reduced price.
I was super impressed that it arrived within one working day. In my excitement, I asked Cynthia, my housekeeper, if she'd like one instead of the usual PJs, bath goodies, choccies, and so forth that I buy her for Christmas.
Of course, she said yes as she'd also heard what a time-saver and how efficient it is. Hers arrived the following day.
I realized the Black Friday specials were still running even though it was the Monday after!
I was impressed with Amazon's super speedy service, and happy that at least this impulse buy was a sensible choice!

PROMPT - Impulse buy - rolling pin, coke and you guess what
The question is:This has been my response to @livinguktaiwan's

What about you? Have you ever bought anything on impulse and then realised you don't need it? It could be from when you're on holiday, or from your local shops or market, or even from someone knocking on your door. Let me know, and make sure to post it in the Three Challenges Community.

I can see why you were attracted to the dress. It really is pretty. Hopefully you will be able to alter it to where you can be happy with the fit.

I almost always see rolling pins at the Hospice or other thrift stores as so many folks don't bake much anymore and when Granny passes, off to the thrift store with her rolling pin! Too bad for them but good for others. I bet you will find one for a very good price. That is a very cute cover. I wonder if it works well.

I too was a total cow's tale on the air fryer. I heard and read a lot about them, but somehow, I couldn't see me using it. My younger sister who still has family at home used hers a lot, but said mostly it was for fries and fast good, chicken nougets and other such things. Finally, it came a time that I gave another sister one for her birthday as she wanted to try, but wasn't to keen on buying, so I made it easy for her and bought her one. Of course, soon after I bought myself one as well. I used mine lightly 4 or 5 times and then it say on the counter for a few months and then I cleaned it again extra good and put it back in the box. LOL ! I asked my Mom if she'd like to try it as she said she had been curious, but by then she said she'd like to think about it and not to get rid of it.... and then she promptly forgot about it, so it is across the room I am sitting in right now, nearly brand new in it's original box. I hope YOU get better usage out of yours than I did with mine.

I do impulse buy once in a while still and "most" of the time I still thought it through enough while standing in front of it to know I will use whatever it is, but sometimes you just don't know till you get it home and see whether it really becomes a part of your life..... or not.

Do yourself a favour and start using it. I roasted a chicken in it, rubbed a little oil on parboiled potatoes and added them towards the end, it was soo good. Sausages, lamb chops, chicken pieces, potato wedges all cooks/airfries beautifully. Roasted veggies too!
I will alter the dress, it's very pretty.

I'm glad yours has worked out for you, but the few things I tried were ok, but not that great. I also decided I didn't like the idea of cooking in hot plastic....LOL.... it's a thang, but either way, I believe I am in the minority on it as others LOVE theirs.

It's a pity the dress is now just hanging there, I hope you will get the inspiration to adjust it as it is pretty nice 😇

Airfryer - I am still not in the club haha, although my son bought himself one. And speaking about him... I just got my ideas about my contribution to this initiative, thanks to you and your post @lizelle! Ok, I am going to prepare my post haha

Aha now I'm curious, look forward to reading your impulse buying😄
It's actually such a fun topic, same as your socks!
I wasn't going to join the Airfryer club but am happy I bought mine on impulse!
That dress will be restored to it's former glory and glitter at the next function I get invited to!
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday @mipiano 🤗

I impulse buy coins for my collection sometimes, but don't really regret it, but my wife does 😀

I love to shop at thrift stores as well. Like you, sometimes I find some real cool buys. In fact I just posted about a book I'm reading that was found at a thrift store.

I love book hunting in thrift stores, found some gems there!
Happy coin-collecting @coinjoe or rather start looking for something to make your wife happy😊

Happy wife makes a happy life

Finish it February bucket ☺️The dress!! Looks like it will join @shanibeer's

It's so easy to carried away in IKEA, everything is so tempting and affordable, often I end up with lots of things that I don't need, but might do one day. Do you have any of those foam tubes for pipes? If you find the right size you can wrap it around your rolling pin and then add the cover. Alternatively, maybe a thick towel might work?

And finally the air fryer, definitely a great successful impulse buy. It's great isn't it? I'm glad you're enjoying it!!

I just popped over to read Finish it February's bucket list, a great idea. That dress will go to the yay box, it's very pretty.
We don't have IKEA here, I wanted to buy so many things. It was even affordable for me with my ZAR!
I'll get a new rolling pin just for that heart silicone cover, will still use my Dad's for rolling our pastry, it's heavy so doesn't require too much effort.
I'm very happy with the air fryer!

I'll say what my mother used to say to my sister when she went shopping.

Wow you have an eye for finding treasures.
Those thrift stores sometimes have hidden gems, and it looks like you've come up with several. The Punjabi thing, well, it seems to me that with a little tweaking it's going to be perfect for those Indian weddings you get invited to. The truth is that having friends from different cultures is always a blessing. Here you have a Venezuelan friend.

I've been going for a long while, often with a younger friend these days, gosh, and she makes sure we scour every little corner!
Meeting people from all over is the beauty of Hive as well. Hugs from a South African friend!

It’s so easy to get carried away, but at least some of those impulse buys can be fun or end up being useful later on.

Sorry for only responding now @iamlovelykate, you're right, it's very easy to be tempted to buy! I will still make use of the dress and rolling pin cover.
