Ants belong to the family Formicidae, order Hymenoptera, which is a group of insects whose members other than ants are wasps and bees. Ants are social insects that live in more or less permanent nests. Colonies vary in size and are mostly located in soil, wood, and among rocks. Their eating behavior is different, some are predators, carrion, plant fluids, or in general containing sugar, or eat everything (omnivores). Ants are insects that are very familiar around the environment we live. Ants can be seen on the walls of buildings, kitchens, lawns or gardens, rotting wood or rocks. As a group, the ants are classified as the most successful insects. Apart from being a nuisance in and around buildings, ants also have the potential to transmit disease to humans and animals.
Ant Body Structure Typically, ants have three distinct body parts, namely the head, thorax and abdomen (Figures 3 and 5).
Generally, the first abdominal segment or the two anterior abdominal segments (which relate to the thorax) are smaller than the others so that they look like a waist. This small basal abdominal segment is called the pedicel or petiole, usually has one or two protrusions called nodes, while the back segment is called the stomach.
The head has a pair of compound eyes, a pair of antennae that form an elbow (elbowed) and sometimes have ocelli. The wings (if any) are clear (membranous), and the front wings are wider and longer than the hind wings.
