Anthocharis cardamines (Linnaeus, 1758)

In diesem Jahr konnte ich das erste Mal den Lebenszyklus vom Aurorafalter dokumentieren. Bei meiner ersten Aufnahme kann man bei genauer Betrachtung das kleine ovale Ei erkennen. Das Weibchen legt seine Eier einzeln an die Knoblauchsrauke (Alliaria petiolata) oder im zeitigen Frühjahr am Wiesen-Schaumkraut (Cardamine pratensis). Hierbei werden Pflanzen im Halbschatten bevorzugt.
This year I could document the life cycle of the Orange tip butterfly for the first time. In my first photo you can see the small oval egg if you look closely. The female lays her eggs individually on the garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) or in early spring on the cuckoo flower (Cardamine pratensis). Plants in partial shade are preferred.

Nach ca. einer Woche schlüpft aus dem Ei die Raupe. Sie ernährt sich von den Blüten und Blättern. Aber auch dünne Stiele werden verspeist. Die Raupe ist perfekt getarnt und verschmilzt mit ihrem Umfeld. Um Sie zu finden, benötigt man ein geübtes Auge.
After about a week from the egg hatches the caterpillar. It feeds on the flowers and leaves. But also thin stems are eaten. The caterpillar is perfectly camouflaged and blends in with its surroundings. To find them, you need a trained eye.

Nach mehreren Häutungen hat sich die Raupe innerhalb fünf Wochen so weit entwickelt, dass sie ihre Futterpflanze verlässt und sich einen geeigneten Platz für die Verpuppung sucht. Hierbei werden trocken Pflanzenstängel bevorzugt. Die Raupe spinnt seidene Fäden um den Stängel und heftet sich daran fest. Jetzt beginnt sie einen Verbund aus Fäden zu spinnen, in dem die Puppe wie mit einem Gürtel hängt.
After several moults, the caterpillar has developed so far within five weeks that it leaves its food plant and looks for a suitable place to pupate. Dry plant stems are preferred for this. The caterpillar spins silken threads around the stem and attaches itself to it. Now it begins to spin a compound of threads in which the pupa hangs like a belt.

Zu Beginn zeigt die Puppe noch ihre frische grüne Färbung. Nach wenigen Tagen färbt sich die Puppe braun und verschmilzt so wieder mit ihrer Umgebung. Die Puppe ruht über den Winter bis in den Frühling. Zeitgleich mit der Blüte vom Wiesenschaumkraut schlüpfen die ersten Aurorafalter.
At the beginning the pupa still shows its fresh green coloring. After a few days, the pupa turns brown and thus merges with its surroundings again. The pupa rests over the winter until spring. The first orange tip butterflies hatch at the same time as the cuckoo flowers.

Das Männchen kann man vom Weibchen an der orange gefärbten Flügeloberseite unterscheiden. Den Weibchen fehlt diese Färbung gänzlich. Auf der Flügelunterseite sind Männchen wie Weibchen identisch gezeichnet.
The male can be distinguished from the female by the orange colored upper wing surface. Females lack this coloration completely. On the underside of the wings, both males and females are identically marked.

Am Morgen oder auch in den Abendstunden findet man die Falter oft ruhend auf Wiesenschaumkraut. Das ist auch die beste Zeit, um den Falter zu fotografieren. Er verbringt an der Futterpflanze die Nacht und man kann sich ihm vorsichtig nähern, ohne dass er davonfliegt.
In the morning or even in the evening hours you can often find the butterflies resting on the cuckoo flower. This is also the best time to photograph the butterfly. It spends the night on the feeding plant and you can approach it carefully without it flying away.

Bei dieser Aufnahme hatte ich das große Glück, ein Männchen mit offenen Flügeln zu fotografieren. Das gelingt am besten am Morgen, wenn der Falter Sonne tankt, um sich aufzuwärmen. Bei dem zweiten Schmetterling handelt es sich um einen Tintenfleck-Weißling (Leptidea reali).
In this shot I was very lucky to photograph a male with open wings. This is best done in the morning when the butterfly is soaking up the sun to warm up. The second butterfly is an Wood white (Leptidea reali).

Der Aurorafalter ist ein Tagfalter aus der Familie der Weißlinge (Pieridae). Er fliegt in Unterfranken von April bis Ende Juni in einer Generation. Der Falter ist noch zahlreich zu beobachten und gilt in seinem Bestand derzeit als nicht gefährdet.
The orange tip is a butterfly of the family Pieridae. It flies in Lower Franconia from April to the end of June in one generation. The butterfly can still be observed in large numbers and its population is currently not considered endangered.

The distribution focus is limited to Europe and the Middle East. I am not surprised that it does not occur in South America. You have other beauties that I look at with great admiration.
