Schmetterlinge gehören zu den beliebtesten Insekten auf der Welt. Dass ca. 80% aller Arten weltweit stark bedroht sind ist vielen Menschen nicht bewusst. Gerade die Nachtfalter sind nicht im Blick der breiten Bevölkerung. Sie führen ein Leben im Verborgenen. Sie werden erst in der Dunkelheit der Nacht aktiv. Um auf den Artenschwund aufmerksam zu macht, kürt jedes Jahr die BUND NRW Naturschutzstiftung den Schmetterling des Jahres. Für das Jahr 2021 wurde der braune Bär ausgewählt.

Butterflies are among the most popular insects in the world. Many people are not aware that about 80% of all species worldwide are severely threatened. Especially the moths are not in the view of the general population. They lead a life in hiding. They only become active in the dark of the night. To draw attention to the loss of species, the BUND NRW Nature Conservation Foundation awards the Butterfly/Moth of the Year every year. The great tiger moth was selected for the year 2021.

Stunning photography once again!

This is another moth on my wishlist, I am desperate to see this one but numbers have severely declined by an estimated 90% in the UK in the last 40 years.

How is the population doing in Germany (or across Europe)?

I had this moth on my wish list for a long time. A befriended entomologist gave me some breeding material. So I was able to breed the moth over the winter for the first time. That was a great experience.

Unfortunately this species is declining also in Germany. On the light we could observe only one male this year.

My puppets are now all in the cold garage. There they spend the winter. In spring the first butterflies hatch. I hope that they all develop well and that a repair of the wings will not be necessary. Thanks again for the link to the film 🦋
