These guys have been roaming around our back patio and this larger beetle crossed my path yesterday. It's big and it's black, but it's a different bug than the Desert Stink Beetle I caught on Saturday.
I was trying to find a picture ID on Google search but didn't see any beetles that made the match. So if there's an App for mushroom ID, there must be one for insects. Right? Right. The Insect ID App I found is telling me this is a Diabolical Ironclad Beetle.
There he is after a journey into the crack that separates the concrete slab in our garage. And here he is again after crawling out.
Out of the sunlight and into the shade. Across the crack in the cement to where my foot was waiting to stop him. For I needed the chance at some different angled pics!
Now he's on the move again, heading for the safety of cover underneath my car. Past the stick and towards the white rock he goes.
Without letting the small rock be an obstacle, he makes his move then returns to heading in a straight line.
You're almost there Mr. Black Beetle. Nothing to stop you but rubble and leaves. I'm not sure why you need my car as protection with the armor plating you have. Hope you aren't up to anything Diabolical under there!
And that's the last I saw of this Diabolical Ironclad Beetle. I'm not sure why they garnered the name Diabolical, other than the way they look. But Ironclad? That one fits like a suit.
Thanks as always for viewing and...

Whoa I've never seen such a beetle before
We live in Southern California. It's a semi-arid desert I believe. Despite all the trees that us humans have planted in the area. 😁
