Australian Cricket Tour of Sri Lanka

in Sports Talk Social9 days ago (edited)

The home summer of cricket is over for Australia, but it's still summer here and the Australian team is still playing cricket. In just over 24 hours the Australian tour of Sri Lanka begins with a bilateral series of 2 x Test Matches followed by 2 x 50 Over Matches. Often this would be considered a one-sided match up but in home conditions Sri Lanka are very difficult to beat...

Australia are coming off a dominant series win at home against international heavyweights India and they have already all-but qualified for the World Test Championship Final later this year. However, this series in Sri Lanka is going to be really interesting because the wickets are likely to take a lot of Spin...and Australia has historically struggled in spinning sub-continent conditions.

The dominant pace attack of Australia is likely to go from 3 to just 1 man as Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood aren't travelling for the Tests. There is a lot of debate about which extra spinners Australia will use. Matt Kuhnemann and Todd Murphy look likely to get the nod and it will be very interesting to see how these guys go. There is also a lot of talk about altering the Australian batting order mid-game to match conditions and that could also be very interesting to see.

It's quite possible Travis Head could be moved up to open the batting and then given a license to hit out at the new ball. Sam Konstas is also likely to try and tee-off if given another chance to open, so the Australian batting could open spectacularly with runs or wickets in the early overs almost guaranteed.

Sri Lanka have been doing ok and flying under the radar a little. I think Dinesh Chandimal could be a big factor grinding runs at home and Angelo Matthews has a wealth of talent and experience too. It would not surprise me to see big batting contributions from these 2 guys against a less experienced spin bowling attack from Australia.

The Betting Markets have Australia as only slight favorites to win the first test match. I think that's about right. Sri Lanka could very likely spring an upset to start off this new bilateral series.

Sort:

Australia will win easily against Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka is not able to show its previous performance
