They needed to prepare for the West Indies team who had some world class fast bowlers and I had to help by doing throw downs. Basically you stand about 8 m away and throw the ball as hard as you can into the ground in front of them so that it travels past them at head height. This was more about preparing a technique to combat hostile bowling. It must have helped because one of them went on to top score in the match.
I don't think that thought about ability was even considered because as a kid you always rated yourself anyway or I did and could just be down to cockiness. It is funny at that age you would believe in your ability.
