This weekend the first date of the Nascar Cup Series playoffs (round of 16) was played at the traditional and historic Darlington circuit located in the state of South Carolina.
This 2,200-meter-long (1,366-mile) track is known in the world of motorsports as “The Lady in Black”, although there are at least a couple of justifications for that nickname, the most likely being given by the black color that The perimeter of the track (usually painted white) is stained by the rubbing of the tires and bodywork during the race. It has another nickname, although not as famous or used: The Track Too Tough to Tame.
For a couple of years, I have followed the broadcasts with great interest, it is a totally different way of running from other categories, not to mention formula one, another of my favorites.
In Nascar races the accident is foreseeable and latent, sometimes involving several vehicles, within the attractions of the show, in addition to the incredible speed and the expertise of the pilots is that possibility. Of course, nobody wants them to be injured and therefore the safety of both the vehicles and the track is taken care of down to the smallest detail, not the behavior of the pilots since friction is not uncommon and even some touch is not quite right. Intentional to gain positions. Unlike other categories, those maneuvers that cause friction and pushing are hardly penalized, they are part of the show.
On this date, the victory corresponded to the number 11, the Toyota of Joe Gibbs Racing driven by Denny Hamlin who achieved his first victory of the season having reached the playoffs by adding points, in this way the good old Denny has already secured his participation in the next round of 12 drivers.
The race had several accidents and yellow flags, curiously, several of the 16 participants in this round had accidents that caused early abandonments in the tough test, among the victims was the reigning champion Chase Elliot who despite the blows and breaks in his Chevrolet number 9 managed to come back and finish in a worthy tenth position that keeps him, at least for now, within the cutoff of 12.
Kyle Larson, the winner of the regular season with 5 victories finished in second place and appears as the favorite to achieve the coveted title this year, if he does, Hendrick Motorsports, the team he represents, would achieve their second consecutive title since Elliot is also part of it.

Este fin de semana se disputó la primera fecha de los playoffs de la Nascar Cup Series (ronda de 16) en el tradicional e histórico circuito de Darlington ubicado en el estado de Carolina del Sur.
Este trazado de 2200 metros de longitud (1,366 millas) es conocido en el mundo de los deportes de motor como “La dama de negro”, aunque hay al menos un par de justificaciones para ese apelativo el más probable está dado por el color negro que queda teñido el perímetro de la pista (habitualmente pintado de blanco) por el roce de los neumáticos y carrocerías durante la carrera. Tiene otro apelativo, aunque no tan famoso ni utilizado: la pista demasiado dura para domar.
Desde hace un par de años sigo las trasmisiones con gran interés, es una forma de correr totalmente distinta a la de otras categorías, ni que decir de la fórmula uno, otra de mis favoritas.
En las carreras de Nascar es previsible y está latente el accidente, en ocasiones involucrando varios vehículos, dentro de los atractivos del show, además de la increíble velocidad y la pericia de los pilotos está esa posibilidad. Por supuesto nadie quiere que haya lastimados y por ello la seguridad tanto de los vehículos como de la pista se cuidan hasta el mínimo detalle, no así el comportamiento de los pilotos ya que no es poco frecuente el roce y hasta algún toque no del todo bien intencionado para ganar posiciones. A diferencia de otras categorías esas maniobras que provocan roces y empujones difícilmente sean penalizadas, son parte del espectáculo.
En esta fecha el triunfo correspondió al número 11, el Toyota del Joe Gibbs Racing conducido por Denny Hamlin quien logró su primer triunfo de la temporada habiendo accedido a los playoffs por suma de puntos, de esta manera el bueno de Denny ya se aseguró su participación en la siguiente ronda de 12 pilotos.
La carrera contó con varios accidentes y banderas amarillas, curiosamente varios de los 16 participantes en esta ronda tuvieron accidentes que provocaron tempranos abandonos en la dura prueba, entre los damnificados se encontró el campeón reinante Chase Elliot quien pese a las golpes y roturas en su Chevrolet número 9 logró regresar y terminar en un digno décimo puesto que lo mantiene, al menos por ahora, dentro del corte de los 12.
Kyle Larson, el más ganador de la temporada regular con 5 victorias terminó en segundo lugar y aparece como el favorito para lograr el ansiado título de este año, de lograrlo, el Hendrick Motorsports, equipo al que representa, lograría su segundo título consecutivo ya que Elliot también forma parte del mismo.
La próxima semana continuará la batalla de esta apasionante categoría del automovilismo mundial.
