Despite only hitting 4 of 14 fairways Rory McIlroy was the best performer of the Supergroup of himself, Schaufelle and Scheffler sitting T4 and 1 off the lead held by Lucas Glover, JJ Spaun and Camilo Villegas.
McIlroy’s recovery shots saved his poor driving and a run of 4 birdies round the turn put him in a great position for day 2 with a round of 67.
Defending Champion Scheffler sits 2 shots further back after missing 3 birdie chances on the back 9.
Viktor Hovland had a day to forget as he was the only player to fail to break 80, after a couple of doubles and a triple bogey he’s going to struggle to make the cut, stranger things have happened though
