Contra todo pronóstico, al igual que como estaba pasando con el grupo del Real Madrid en la Champions, el Legia Varsovia había sorprendido en la Europa League poniéndose líder con 5 puntos de ventaja, en un grupo que compartía con el Leicester City y el Napoli.

La verdadera sorpresa sucedería en la segunda jornada, donde contra todo pronóstico el equipo ruso asaltó la casa del líder imbatible de la Serie A, llevándose los 3 puntos, y en Polonia, el Legia le ganó al Leicester por la mínima, confirmando la primera gran crisis de Brendan Rodgers en el banquillo de los "foxes".
