All you wanted to know about Billiards

in Sports Talk Social4 years ago (edited)

I am going to write in this article about the popular cue game called Billiards.
Lets understand the history first.
It was borne in France. It earliest recorded playing of a recognisable form of billiards was in France in the 1340s. Played as an outdoor lawn game similar to croquet, it eventually moved indoors and onto a wooden table with green cloth to resemble grass on which it had been previously played.
The cue stick was developed in the late 1600’s. When the ball lay near a rail, the mace was very inconvenient to use because of its large head. Later the game was also known as game of cue.

I am comparatively new to the #sports platform and this is just my second article on this platform.

Movies on Billiards

Billiards was revived by two electrifying events. The first was the release of the 1961 movie, "The Hustler." The black-and-white film depicted the dark life of a pool hustler, with Paul Newman in the title role. New pool rooms opened all over the country and for the remainder of the '60s pool flourished until social concerns, the Vietnam War, and a desire for outdoor coeducational activities led to a decline in billiard interest. In 1986, "The Color of Money," the sequel to "The Hustler" with Paul Newman in the same role and Tom Cruise as an up-and-coming professional, brought the excitement of pool to a new generation. The result was the opening of upscale pool rooms catering to people whose senses would have been offended by the old rooms if they had ever seen them. This trend began slowly in 1987 and has since surged.

Types of Billiards
The most popular kinds of billiard are:

  • Pool present in different disciplines: “Eight,” “Nine”, is popular around the world. Pool is played in the U.S., Europe and actively developing in Asia.

  • Russian billiards also known as Russian Pyramid”, “Moscow pyramid”, “Chicago pool”, etc. became popular, especially in the countries of the former Soviet Union. That is why, at the World Championships in this type of billiard it is difficult to meet the players from the U.S.

  • Snooker is rapidly gaining worldwide popularity. Previously, snooker has been the game for the aristocracy of Great Britain, now it marches through Europe and Asia, conquering the hearts of players by its demands to the spatial and tactical thinking.

Snooker Vs. Billiards

Do you know there is a significant difference in the Billiards and Snooker.
Billiards’ was originally a term to describe a game called ‘carom billiards’ exclusively, but has since evolved into a general term to describe a variety of games played on a table with balls and a cue stick. Snooker uses twenty-two balls, including a white ball known as the ‘striker’ ball.
Billiards, on the other hands, uses only three balls: one each of white, yellow, and red, with both the white and the yellow able to act as the striker ball.

Billiards vs. Pool vs. Snooker

  1. Billiards – played on a table that has no pockets and uses 3 balls. One red ball, one white ball with a spot, and one white ball without a spot.
  2. Pool – played on a table with 6 pockets with 9 to 15 object balls plus an additional cue ball. The number of balls depends on the type of pool you’re playing. More on that below.
  3. Snooker – played on a table that has 6 pockets. Snooker tables are larger than pool tables but the pockets are smaller than a pool tables’. Snooker is played with 15 pink numberless balls, 6 numbered object balls, and 1 cue ball.

The cue stick was developed in the late 1600’s. When the ball lay near a rail, the mace was very inconvenient to use because of its large head. Later the game was also known as game of cue.
