Curiosity Almost Killed Us

Curiosity is a normal thing. It makes us want to learn, explore, and try new things. But sometimes, curiosity can lead to trouble. My friend and I learned this the hard way when our little adventure in secondary school almost turned into a disaster.

It happened when we were in my first year in senior secondary school. I am a new student because I was transferred from my old school to a new one, which made me start my senior secondary in another school, Our school had an old building at the back of the compound. It was no longer in use, and everyone said it was dangerous. The teachers warned us to stay away, but that only made me more curious. Some students whispered stories about the place, that something bad had happened there in the past.

One afternoon, during break time, my friend and I (Mary) stood near the building, staring at it. I told her What if we go inside and check it out? And she responded What if we get caught? I looked around and told her there was no one, I was quite stubborn that year.

I wasn’t sure about what we were about to do but the curiosity was too strong. We wanted to see what was inside, just for fun. We walked around the building, looking for a way in. The front door was locked, but at the back, there was a small wooden door that was slightly open. We looked at each other and clapped. Without thinking twice, we pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The air in that building was thick and dusty. It smelled old, like something forgotten. The room was dark, so we held each other's hands and moved carefully. Broken chairs, dusty books, and cobwebs were everywhere. It was clear that no one had been here for a long time.

At first, it was fun. We laughed as we moved around, picking up old notebooks and reading faded writings on the blackboard. But then, things started to feel strange. We heard a noise. A deep creaking sound.

At this point we were both afraid, my friend began to shake, and I held my peace though I was shaky but the thought of seeing the end of my curiosity made me stronger. My friend grabbed my arm and shouted let’s go.

We agreed to leave and go back to the class when the wooden door beneath us suddenly cracked. We both reacted toward each other and both fell. My whole body ached, and for a few seconds, I couldn’t move. Then I heard my friend groan and struggled.

I quickly turned toward her. She was lying on the floor, breathing heavily, her leg was stuck under a big piece of wood, and couldn't move. I began to panic. The air was thick with dust, making it hard to breathe. My heart beat heavily as I tried to pull the wood off her leg, but it was too heavy.

Immediately I told her that we needed to get out of the building while my voice was shaking, my friend couldn't move her leg and that was when I realized how serious our situation was. We were trapped, and no one knew we were there. No one would come looking for us because we had sneaked in secretly.

I took a deep breath and tried pushing the wood using all my strength. My friend screamed in pain, but little by little, it started to move. Finally, she managed to pull her leg out. We tried to get out of the old building and fell on the ground outside, breathing heavily. My friend was crying silently, holding her leg.

That’s when we realized how close we had been to something terrible. If we had stayed there any longer, if she had been more seriously hurt, if no one had found us, we might not have made it out alive those questions were running through my head

That evening, we didn’t talk much. We just sat in our hostel, thinking about what had happened. We had let our curiosity control us, and it almost led to disaster.

After that, we never tried anything like that again. We learned our lesson the hard way, some places are better left unexplored. Some doors are locked for a reason.
