Isolation is not a bad thing but rather it is a means to find oneself again and to be distant from environment that are not particularly healthy or have positive impact on an individuals mental health. There are various reasons why people would want to isolate themselves, for example, toxic relationships, social activities, toxic environment, trust issues, fear, societal expectations and so on. The society we live in is such a toxic and an ambiguous one in the sense that some people expect more from you and when you cannot give that, a soft-minded individual with low self-esteem might be forced to stay away. Temporary isolation is a good thing somehow it's a means of self-care and to heal personally but when it gets bad is when a person isolates his or herself for a long period of time, it could be harmful and my lead to depression.
As an introvert, one of our personality traits is our preference to Solitude, deep meaningful connections with people who we trust rather than constant social engagement. Personally speaking, one of the reasons why I isolate myself especially from social interactions especially with people who I am not familiar with is because it gives the feelings of energy drainage. I am not particularly a fan of large groups especially when it is unnecessary because they can be emotionally exhausting. In essence, I could just find an excuse to leave the environment just to be alone and recharge.
Asides being an introvert, one of the general reasons why people of all character or personality trait tend to isolate themselves is to reflect on their thoughts, goals and choices in life. These sort of isolation is one that brings about self reflection on a person's general well-being. These can be described as a positive means of isolation that helps an individual to be mentally prepared for their future and their general well-being.
Often times, as an individual we just want to be by ourself void of the external influence of the world or people. Based on personal experience, there are moments where I just desire to rely on myself and block out every other distractions sometimes I even distance myself from my friends. I believe this can be termed as intentional isolation which is a good thing because it's not every time a person would want to be around people but somehow it is okay to withdraw and be by yourself. This can help to mentally calm you down and relieve stress.
