Death is indeed a cruel thing. I just lost a neighbor of mine. "Mama Emeka", as we referred to her as, was a beautiful young lady who was married with three little boys. Emeka happened to be her first son. Joshua, who was the last born was about to be a big brother as his mother was pregnant. But I guess he never got to have the experience of how it feels to be a big brother.
Mama Emeka was a really calm person. Never making problem with anyone. She was quite a peaceful woman. She was not known for the type of person who makes noise like other women in our compound. She does relate and socialize with other women though, but she was quite different from them. We couldn't tell if that attitude of hers was just temporal when she newly packed into the compound with her family, but eventually time revealed that the first impression she gave us was actually genuine.

The time eventually arrived when she was due for delivery. I wasn't around when she was carried by some neighbors to where she could deliver her baby. Everyone who stayed back where all anticipating the good news. Is it going to be a boy? Or is it going to be a girl? Or better still, is it going to be twins? Who knows?!
While waiting on her arrival and her new born baby, we saw the neighbors who took her to the place of delivery returning back without Mama Emeka or her baby. And worse, they weren't returning with good news, instead it was the opposite. "Mama Emeka didn't make it." What did I just hear? I could feel my heart skip a beat on hearing this sad news. But it was more tragic than that. Turned out the baby didn't make it as well. Both mother and innocent baby didn't make it out alive.
Listening to what had happened was just to painful to bear. It so happened that Mama Emeka successfully gave birth to the baby which happened to be a bouncing baby boy after a very excruciating labor experience. It wasn't long after she had given birth, after the exhaustion she went through delivery, she breathed her last breath.
The midwives were left with the poor child. While they were cleaning the baby up, they later noticed that it stopped moving. After carefully examining the baby, they found out that it had stopped breathing. The poor baby never even got to see the sunlight, not even once.

It was really painful listening to these words, just as it is writing and remembering that day.
I couldn't imagine the greater pain her family was feeling. I couldn't help but wonder how her husband broke the sad news to the little children she had left behind. It was really unfair for them to lose their mother at such tender ages. It was indeed a really sad incident. She wasn't the first woman in the compound who had left for delivery. The return of others brought about celebration. But in her own case, it was quite different.
What had the poor woman done to deserve this? It was a day of grieve that very day. The entire compound mourned the demise of Mama Emeka. I hope to never experience such incident again. I pray the Lord grants her soul a peaceful rest. Amen.
