Slow, slower, slowest...

in Qurator2 days ago

This week, the subject of the Qurator Photo Contest is slow.
And although I like speed more, I do have a couple of pictures of some very slow things in my photo archive.

Snails and slugs

Snails and slugs aren't my favorite animals. But because of their slowness they are one of the few animals that are really easy to photograph. They move very slowly and their tentacle eyes are very curious.

Despite the fact that snails and slugs are easy models, I still don't like them in my backyard. Apart from photography I also have gardening as a hobby. Every year I'm trying to grow some vegetables in my backyard, but last year was a disaster. We really had hundreds of slugs that ate all my crops. They even crawled into my tomato plant to eat the juicy cherry tomatoes.
I don't like to use poison or cups of beer to drown them in, so I really didn't had anything to harvest last year.
I hope it will be better this year.

Tortoises

Some other animals that are easy to photograph are tortoises. These fascinating animals can get older than humans.
I haven't seen many of them in the wild, but I did see quite a few in captivity. The photo below is from Lonesome George. I took the photograph when we visited the Galapagos archipelo many years ago.
Lonesome George was a famous Pinta Island tortoise. He was the last known of his species. The tortoise population was nearly wiped out by whalers and sailors in the 19th and 20th centuries, who took them for food. Despite efforts to find a mate and save his species, he never produced offspring. He died in 2012.

Gardening is a wonderful activity for any of us to be involved in, @friendlymoose, and this just isn't right:

"They even crawled into my tomato plant to eat the juicy cherry tomatoes."

I mean eating anything in your garden is bad enough. But, your cherry tomatoes? A step too far, no doubt. That was an excellent picture catching it in the act, so it is not like they can claim they didn't do it. 😉

Seriously, we had a similar problem this past summer. More than any previous summer, in which we typically just ignore them and they don't eat much. 🤷‍♂️ We found taking steps to reduce shade and any wet areas anywhere near our plants helped a lot. We were not going to use any poisons or cups of beer either, so were thankful that it helped.

As for the tortoise, it was sad to read that it was the last of its species and has since died, but it must have been quite the adventure to get to visit the Galapagos islands. As a photographer, I would imagine you have quite a library of shots taken there to help with your memories of that adventure.

I have never seen a tortoise that I can recall. Plenty of turtles though. We have even stopped here and there, to help them across the road, when they clearly are not thinking clearly about what their chances are of surviving it on their own.

Your pictures are very nice. I wish you success in this competition. Too bad that turtle couldn't have offspring. 🥺

Gardening is a very relaxing activity but those things that happen tend to stress hahaha.... Relax. Everything will be better this year.

Thanks! It could hardly get any worse than last year 😄

Awesome theme, and so nice to open up @Ecency after a while and meet your post in my feed. (Even though I wished Ecency stays at their Desktop V3 quality. V4 is full of bugs and snails and I'm lacking the incentives to use web 2 Discord for improving web 3 Hive. Anyway.) Good to "see ya".

Please help us fix v4 bugs, report them when you get chance with as much details you can. Thank you! No need to use discord for reporting, use https://ecency.com/waves or any comments with mention.

Thanks for reacting. Waves looks like a good idea, thank you.

PS: Sorry to say, but another mess bites the dust.
