Our users are still confused about HiveSigner

in Hive Improvement4 years ago (edited)

I have shared much of this feedback directly with @good-karma by video months ago apparently there was an update recently but I don't have a side by side to see what changed... seems the same.

I want to share this as a post because maybe myself and our new users are way off base or we're all idiots. Maybe there really is no issue and we should just be smarter

Anyway I'll share the screenshot with my notes.
We have chosen to support Hivesigner on PeakD.com and Peakmonsters.com ... so I have a vested interest in this experience getting better and I think it starts with the first page.

The biggest thing is to put yourself in the shoes of someone BRAND NEW ... not someone who's been around for 4 years is a developer and interacts with the software already every day. There is just way too many things that are not clear.

It's all about AMBIGUITY

HIVE USERNAME
What username? ... Am i creating one? Is this a username i'm supposed to already have specifically for hivesigner? Is this a Hive username? Just put the word Hive next to it and you put out the fires before they start... you answer the questions with one word.

HIVE KEYS
Why call it private key? Who in the world even knows how to find their public keys... they can go to hiveblocks website and maybe find them or use keychain to find them... and realize that NO hive application in the world asks a user for public keys. Just call them Hive Keys.

STORE YOUR KEYS
This is your chance to educate everyone how cool your application is. (technologically speaking)
They have no clue that you're not saving their keys in some server... tell them you're saving them right there on their computer. Tell them THEY are saving their keys and they're also encrypted. It's amazing!! Why not tell them!! It's awesome it makes them feel good and safe.

In fact the page needs a title and maybe that's what it should be called. "Safely store your Hive keys" but that's not true because only the checkbox does that perhaps.
They will know that the end result of this page that they're on is what...? To store their Hive keys. Or maybe log into the application.
If that's what this page is all about call it that. The page has zero recap explaining why the user is there.
"Login using HiveSigner" ... that's also an option

REPEAT REPEAT
it's fine to use the word "Hive" a bunch... it's a site for saving and helping users transact on... HIVE!!

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Actually probably doesn't matter what you or I think... it matters what new users think. I haven't done a test of a new user in a month or two... we're waiting on some big design changes. But this page hasn't changed much and last time I tested it they were very confused.

Sort:

I've been around for a while, almost 3 years and sometimes when I need to add some extra account it becomes a headache to do it using my smartphone, because let's be honest we spend a lot of time on the smartphone, in the end I almost always end up waiting to get home and do it from the pc with keychain.

Yeah I use to not even want to use my own app on mobile (peakmonsters.com) because it required hivesigner I'm still not totally certain how it works... i think i'm way more sure of how it works these days after asking a ton of questions. But if i leave for a month or two and come back i totally forget what's going on and am confused again for a little bit of time.

Both of you are lucky/fortunate to have a PC. I cannot afford it. I do everything on my smartphone (currently a Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite), including writing articles with hundreds, sometimes thousands of words.

For peakd i use peaklock... but that's mainly a posting key service not great for active key.

Agree 100%. That’s how allot of the tools seem to come out. That’s a problem with allot of devs that don’t have a front end or UX/UI person working with them. They make programs that they understand and don’t think as much about the end user, or new users at all for that matter.

Totally agree.

I've been on Hive for 3.5 years and still find Hivesigner confusing and avoid using it.

Another confusing is this :

_ Peakd : new in town ? i am redireciting you to hivesigner.
_ Hivesigner : alright, please log in !
_ İ : ok, sure that's easy.
_ Hivesigner : great you are logged in.
_ İ : so, take me back to peakd.
_ Hivesigner : That's a quite hard matter.
_ İ : "returning to peakd by myself"
_ Peakd : Hey there new dude, go to hivesigner and come back, i will be waiting for you.

And so on.

I'm signed in to peakd in the browser of the beta test version of Keychain on the iPhone.

I have to agree Hivesigner has an awful UI for newbies.

I totally agree, it's all very confusing and should be explained in detail jut like you did in the picture. Maybe he will let you work for him editing the layout of his code, he just needs someone with attention to detail like that.

They didn't build the software they bought it or inherited it from an old steem developer. But I'm happy to give insights but I think it's even better if there is confirmation of a need to change by many other people

Seems like those changes could be done in a day, I hope they see your proposal.

Great points @jarvie and I agree pretty much across the board. Well said.

A lot of this is Landing Page design 101, so I hope it gets implemented. 🙏

I'm four years on hive and hate anything that uses it. Makes no sense and doesn't work. It's easier to paste keys or wait to get to my computer for keychain.

I'm just hoping that the mobile keychain works with apps soon so we can avoid hive signer and pasting keys. Simplicity is the most important thing and it doesn't have it.

Hivesigner is utter garbage.

Im happy to see you guys are starting to notice how bad our UX is across the board.

To be fair...
What i have realized is that it could be an amazing tool with just a few pretty easy changes.

Also I could probably pretty harsh on my own site in a few places. Just takes time to get around to them.

UX changes require talent. As is seen by the fact that hivesigner has been crap for years.
Its easier to find a dev to code some stuff than a quality UX change designer.

Some may say productive and helpful conversation requires talent ;)

Are you saying im super talented or not talented enough. 😂

UX design is just a different skill set. I think across the board Hive devs underestimate the importance of it but I've been screaming for years that Hives number one problem is UX. At the end of the day though I do have to agree that Hivesigner has always been pretty terrible.

Im feeling very positive about devs recently showing interest in fixing the UX. Especially Peakd and Ecency. The old guard devs are more set in their ways and not flexible when it comes to new user experience.

Maybe just put a link below on the website that has a more in depth tutorial on HiveSigner and specifically what you need to do to log in to your account, for me it's easy because I log in daily but surely many newbies are having some trouble figuring out what everything is for.

Excellent feedback

Not so excellent comment.

You're both excellent in my book ;)

All valid points.

I think for me they have to be really specific when they ask for the 'key' and outright say which one.

I think they need to explain that they are a tool that stores whatever key you want (on their own computer). And when an app needs a type of key they present it to the customer that way.

"PeakD needs X key. You have not stored that key using HiveSigner. Store it now?"

Something like that.

Yes that sounds perfectly sensible and clear. I struggle with it regularly when adding a new account on my phone. I just keep wishing it was absolutely transparent what was required when

I specifically don't use anything with HiveSigner because of these issues... I've been on this blockchain for five years now (apparently lol) and if there is no option for keychain I don't bother. Hive signer seems to want me to make a new password every time I use it, so if it's not reusable, what's the point? Too much hassle!!!

Thank you Sir

Oh cool! Very cool post, thank you for that! I'm a newbie on the platform and when I needed to log in through HiveSinger, I couldn't.
