Here’s a new music video I shot/cut/produced/directed in and around lockdown, late 2020.
It’s for ‘Flowers’ from Joe Tilston; a Yorkshire based performer and songwriter.
His new album ‘Tightrope’ is out very soon.
He’s been a releasing a few singles - each with music videos - over the last two months. This is one of them :)

The theme of the video I wanted was to take was this idea of these scenes being like a magic trick. The idea of vanishing.
The idea of playing with someone’s expectations and giving things a different perspective.
I utilised this in a couple of ways; one with the idea of the camera scanning across the room with him appearing it different places doing different busy things as it moves.
The other using transitions and green screen moments to blend scenes and distort reality.
As well as literally making him literally disappear, sometimes in an actual in a puff of smoke.
The other fairly obvious lockdown related meaning was jumping from the claustrophobic indoor locations to other outdoor scenes which represented letting go and getting on with things.
There were huge gaps in production, mainly due to availability over lockdown and losing/regaining momentum on the idea.
But we got there in the end!
Other Joe Things
Joe is also best known for his guitar work in renowned ska-punk band Random Hand
RH are famed for their very high energy live performances and pulling crowds where ever they have gone over the last 15 years.
Their gigs are a riot, with mosh pits, endless erratic bouncing about on stage, crowd surfing - all sorts! It’s ace.
Joes solo work is a more reflective, slower and melodic body of work, incorporating huge elements folk and acoustic songwriting.
However I think supporters of RH like his new offerings too.

Great video. I like what you did there with the effects. Man, I bet that was a real challenge with scheduling when the country was in and out of lock down. What a pain in the ass. Glad you guys saw it to the end though. Well done.
Mate is really was a pain trying to make it work!
It looks about 8 months of sitting on stuff and trying to nail a date to shoot the next bits, then we forgot and got distracted, then shot some more bits 😂

how long did it take to film all those transitions in the room? i see that clock has no battery :)

It was a good 20 takes in the room, of a variety of actions.
The clock was a super old antique and very heavy, brought in for the video. It didn’t actually work, but we wanted that the time didn’t actually change. It wasn’t really about passing time.
It was all shot on the Ronin-s using the ‘track’ feature, which gave us the exact same movement of shot each time/take. So it was just carefully cut together, and aligned if needed.
My favourite is the transition from the room to the woods.
I’ll have to do a post on the BTS of that moment, it was very complicated even though it doesn’t look it 😂

room woods transition had to be tricky. Now looking at it closely, a lot of masking (probably) 😂
first thought was greenscreen, but now i think that the woods shot is the "original". Nicely done.

The first 2-3 seconds him standing in the woods was him shot on a greenscreen, then he walked off away from the green along with the camera. I shot another clean version of the woods without him for the layer of the trees behind him.
It worked really nice!

That's a cool video. Looks like a lot of work with the locations and all the editing, but it works well with the song. Hope it does well for him.

Thanks @steevc! I hope it gets decent reach too. His music will do and does do well, there’s an audience for this kind of music. Frank Turner is one that comes to mind who pioneers folk style rock. Not sure what the genre technically is tbh!
I don't think of music in terms of genres. I either like it or I don't.

How many takes did you need to get it that way? The Gimbal looks heavy, I think you did not need to go to the gym that day :D
Thanks man! We did two different takes with the smoke at the end. However we did lots of takes during the living room/home scenes, just so they could be cut together with different versions etc

Well done! I was wondering how you were doing the transitions. I thought maybe the panning was done in post and you were just cutting between two different static shots. Would love to see some green screen pics!
This is a BTS from the pov of the Ronin. It’s an adhoc greenscreen setup, but it did the trick!
It’s was FREEZING cold so he was in a coat whenever not required on camera! 🥶
