MemeHive Weekly Meme Digest - May 08-May 14, 2020

by @holovision

Time for the second MemeHive weekly review! Once again, I am excluding my own memes as a rule. These are the sacrifices I make. :-)

I am currently raising funds to start a meme tribe on the hive blockchain. The purpose of the tribe is to encourage good and quality memes while tokenizing memes to add value for the creative work.

Following are some of the good memes that have been posted on Hive in the last week using the #meme tag.

I like this meme by @sc-steemit titled "Cats all over the world regret their decisions". Maybe it's because I am a dog person and this meme makes me feel schadenfreude.

I am sure this is the "new norm" of 2020. Please do follow government orders to stay at home during this pandemic if you can and we can all get through this together.

Which contrasts with...

I don't have to agree with the meme. I just need to respect the freedom of speech behind the meme. It's a little anti-vaxxer but a good mocking of Bill Gates never hurt anybody. It never improved his closed source operating system either.

What can I say? This meme is like looking in a mirror sometimes. I was never really social so the current pandemic is a useful excuse for me.

People can be just as contrarian as they are bad at statistics. Somebody yesterday on a radio show was saying this pandemic is not "as big of a deal" as the government claims. The person justified their opinion by dividing the population of California by the number of COVID-19 cases currently in California to get a "probability of contracting a simple cold". That's simply not how statistics works. The probability that a person doing elementary school math getting COVID-19 isn't the same probability as a three year old in Fullerton which also isn't the probability of someone with a compromised immune system in Los Angeles getting COVID-19 which also isn't the same probability as a senior citizen in San Diego getting COVID-19. The government actually hires statisticians who learned more math than a sixth grader and can make statistical models.

Fine. Moving on...

My INTJ personality needed this after the last meme. Something a little humorous but also inspirational.

@claudio83 posted this meme with some accompanying text in the post. Almost always that is a good sign of a quality meme. Also, since people on Hive tend to have at least some experience with trading cryptocurrency I think it's safe to asssume we can all relate to this.

MemeHive Community I am going to add extra credit bonus points and bump it up in the review. May that be a lesson to all of you. :-)This probably would have wound up as an "Honorable Mention" this week but since @sometacos posted it in the

Honorable Mentions:

Only one "Honorable Mention" this week. It's an O.K. meme but I wanted to use this for a more general commentary.

This is based on a common template for memes that is described in the "Daily Struggle" entry of knowyourmeme.com. It's possible to make funny and great memes with this kind of template but in my opinion using this is taking a huge risk of looking like a lazy meme. Maybe I am wrong? Feel free to post your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.

Some on Hive believe memes can't be "quality content". I believe memes have the potential of being quality content. Like jokes they might not always deliver the idea or concept well but they do serve a purpose like other styles of content.
