Hallgrimskirkja or Church on the Hill

Iceland, Reykjavik.

I was blessed with a two-days stay at the capital of the magical island country during a photo-travel. However, I should call this a "two-days walk" as there was virtually no stay that time. There was so much to explore for that so limited time.

So I've passed by and noticed several churches and cathedrals, small and big, but the one that deeply impressed me and to be honest, it took my breath away the first time I saw it raising high in the skies in front of me, was the Hallgrimskirkja or the "Church on the Hill".

I took many photographs of it during those two walking days. Many views and perspectives, from many angles. Close-ups and distant views. The scape of the beautiful city gives such a different foregrounds and backgrounds. The people, simply passing by or admiring this marvel, too.

Like it or not, I believe everyone would agree that the architectural style of this cathedral is something unique. Like it or not, it really affects.

Personally, some of the times it was giving me chills and creeps, sometimes I could see the crying human spirit, trying to reach the heavens with those thousands of concrete hands and arms... The constant desire to evolve spiritually, embedded in this divine construction...

This first photograph is my entry to "Qurator's Photo Quest | Frame in Frame" by @qurator, thank you! I captured it while composing the beautiful windows of the tower and later I noticed the hands and the serious expression on the face of that lady, who was trying to snap the cityscape from above.

Anyway, I hope you'll agree with me that any angle, by which this piece or art is viewed, has its charm and awesomeness! Moreover, with its breathtaking height, I believe it is visible from all around the city.

Just to add, that somehow, driven by the mood this achievement inflicts on me, I am seeing all those picture in Black and White only.

Now I realize that maybe black and white are the colors of eternity. Of the intransient things and neutrality. Because that's what inspires this majestic structure. And perhaps this was precisely the purpose of the construction of all temples - to give peace and hope to people. Infusing them with the soothing sense of eternity best conveyed through black and white photography.
Thank you endlessly for this wonderful black and white post, for the beauty showed and the feelings you conveyed to us!

Now, just to spice the conversation up a bit, black and white are not colors but shades! :D :P
Everything else you say, I totally agree. You always find a way to share your thoughts in such a beautiful, poetic way...
Thank you, the pleasure is all mine!

Ha ha, if you knew me better, you would know that I use my own terms for most things without regard to their real names and the norms. And such nuances in the words as the difference between shades and colors are not particularly important to me. 😃
Still, thanks for the clarification!

That's such an amazing way to describe this unique structure! Described in this way, it invites you to go and see it, to explore its incredible design and construction, work of centuries of accumulated history, skill and experience.
And the pictures... they are gorgeous as always!
Thank you!

Thank you :)
This place is indeed divine and quite spiritual, despite its harsh outlook :)

Thank you :)

Although for me Icelandic highlights are all in the nature part, no doubt that church is unique. Great photos as usual!

So true! Nature is unique there, in so many ways and this in terms made people there unique and the most of their creations too. For instance, the street art I saw at the time, a lot of hardcore stuff :)

Thanks so much :)

It's definitely one of the countries I want to visit again. Cheers! !BEER

Me too, me too :)

Great shots buddy. I love the last one the most. The reflection of shadows on water is great.

Thanks, buddy :)

That church is incredible - such fantastic design. Hopefully I'll get to see it in person one day !

A brilliant piece of Art indeed! :)
I wish you do that ;)

I dont know buddy, if it is the black and white effect or just the church, but it reminds me the LoTR, the tower of Sauron! 😆 Nice post in any case 👍

I see the resemblance now, cheers :)

Making use of black and white for detailed effect, second and third captures really framed!

Thank you :) Yes, the second and the third picture are probably much closer to the photo contest theme but the first... I like more, as it is a bit more artistic, at least in my eyes :D

Architecture most definitely unique.

To me the first one is the best ... I like the "out of balance" effect. Perfect example of negative space! Most people put things in the middle. Great one!

Thank you! The first image from the series I post is almost always my favorite too :)
