The secret mysteries of the past...
While I was looking at the photos that I will show you below, preparing them for this post, the following thought came to my mind: what if everything in this world was clear? What if all secrets were solved, if all treasures were found, if all men possessed all the knowledge of the world, and that knowledge was unambiguous, i.e. with no room for variation in interpretation?
What if there is nothing left to discover?
I'm not even talking about what Schopenhauer wrote about "what if life were easy" here, although the two conditions are somehow related. Both conditions have not very pleasant consequences for humanity, as strange as this may sound.
Because, imagine the assumption I made. If everything in this world were clear, open and unambiguous, life would be endlessly boring. And this boredom would have unpleasant, even terrible consequences for humanity.
I personally don't want things to be clear. I want to discover. Just as great explorers have done throughout the ages.
And for some things I wish there was knowledge available that could be read somewhere. But I don't mind if there is no such knowledge available. And it simply means that the world is still an interesting place. Don't you think so?
It also stimulates your own thought or ability to think, observe, discover and judge.
I had already heard many times about this type of cult complex with trapezoidal niches cut into the rock, but only last year I had the opportunity to visit one of them - the so-called Orlovi skali or Eagle Rocks in the Rhodope Mountains.
This place is reached by a steep path in the mountains, and if you are lucky enough to find yourself there alone and not with a large group of noisy people, believe me, the connection with this ancient place, this ancient, still unsolved mystery, is incredible.
Imagine what these rocks have seen. What have they experienced? For so many centuries they have been here, witnessing everything. So many civilizations.
And finally us - perhaps the most unreasonable and insane of all.
I was particularly impressed by these carvings in the horizontal rocks. Not only in the vertical ones.
It had just rained and it was expected to rain again. And to be caught in a storm in such a mountainous place would be a terrible experience.
The eternal sky is reflected in the eternal rock - what stronger personification of eternity can there be than this. An eternity reflected in another eternity.
But I was in no hurry. I was looking. I was touching this stone, these sacred rocks.
I went around from all sides.
To examine and study it. The storm could wait.
It was as if I expected these rocks to tell me something. Because ONLY they know.
Only they know what these rock niches were created and used for.
Whether it was for funerary or cultic rites, researchers and scholars still cannot agree.
Or they were created for something entirely different.
Nothing can be said for sure at the moment.
The only sure thing I can tell you is that this place feels sacred and I'm glad I finally visited it.

remember how it was when we were children! We didn't care to do it perfectly, but to try and learn empirically on our own! Somehow we are like that as adults, we just have it hidden! We are used to the convenience offered by our age and technology, but we really lack and seek that childlike feeling of exploration and play! Good morning!

While writing the post, I looked at the map of the Southern part of the country and saw how many other rock sites there are there. And considering how much I love stones in general, not just sacred places, there is a lot of material to "discover" and explore in this country - something I didn't realize before the crisis forced me to stay home and no longer travel abroad. 😊
Ancient people did have knowledge and skills that we no longer possess. That is why I have always said that we are the most unreasonable creatures that have ever lived on earth. Well, I know a lot can be argued about this.
