Less Scroll Time

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to talk about how I've reduced my evening scrolling time!

Less Scroll Time

Trying to get better at using my time in the evening!

One of the things that we can often fall victim to is being bored and going through things on the internet.. that's the allure of it! There is ALWAYS something to do, see, look at, find. It's really fascinating and quite a wild thing to think about. At the same time, it is not at all natural for our bodies to have this constant engagement of the brain and especially the conscious brain.

We are built to do as much as we can do defer things to the subconscious so that our conscious brain can take a rest or focus on other things. For example, one of the things that I love to do because it is fully subconscious at this point is fold clothes. My wife gets mad at me because I fold clothes, put them in a basket and then I put them away. She complains that it takes longer but I rather enjoy it because I get to defer to my subconscious and let my conscious mind wander while I listen to a podcast or something. This is important for my mental health, and important for other people's mental health but sadly many don't understand that!

In the evenings after my son goes to bed, one of the things that I've been doing a significant amount more of is NOT being on my phone. I've made it quite a point to spend less time and I'm happy to say that I'm sticking to it many nights! Sure I will have a night or two where I'll scroll through things for a little bit but I have a time limit on that crap before I move on. I think I will actually start to set timers on my phones apps if I can figure it out, so that I will get limited in what time I am spending on it before it locks out.

Spending less time wasting my brain and energy on just dumb scrolling has been far more enjoyable. I get to do a lot more like clean the house, do laundry, shower in the evening and then do other adult things that I need to do such as bills, banking and others. These are the far more important things on my daily routine than just wasting time on some dumb apps that are trying to keep you on there as long as possible so they can harvest more data about you, put ads in your face so they can make more money off you and just keep you overall dumb.

It may sound extreme that this is what is going on.. but it 100% is. I know that a fair bit of the peeps here on Hive recognize and understand this problem but sadly quite a lot of people in the physical world still don't seem to get this yet, which is sad and challenging. I think things are thankfully changing in the better direction with that though, as I hear it being talked about a significant amount of time more than it was before, so that's hope for us as humanity!

Tonight was one of those nights, where I actually didn't spend any time on my phone after my son went to bed, I just got straight to work on stuff! It felt good, and certainly best for me in the long run.

I am also trying to cut down on my random scrolling, but my success has been mixed. There are days where I am disciplined enough, but there are days where I get hooked to some interesting clips. Always a work in progress. Hehe.

Yeah man for sure me too! Some days, like today, I did really good. Last night though, I was pretty bad and wasted an hour just scrolling shit LOL it is for sure a work in progress :D good for you for trying to improve on it!
