Today, I’d like to share my dining experience at Feng Ji Shanghai Restaurant. The head chef is originally from Zhejiang and specializes in Shanghai cuisine, so this restaurant is said to be a must-visit for those craving authentic Shanghai flavors. However, since I’ve never been to Shanghai myself, I can’t personally vouch for its authenticity. That said, many celebrities and food critics have visited this place, so I ended up experiencing a well-known and delicious restaurant by chance.

The reason we chose Feng Ji Shanghai Restaurant was that my college friends and I hadn’t gathered in a long time and wanted a place to catch up. Since none of us could decide on a location, a friend who lives in Yonghe highly recommended this restaurant. The restaurant is conveniently located near Dingxi MRT Station, Exit 2, making it easily accessible. So, we decided to give it a try.

Aside from company dinners, I rarely eat this kind of family-style shared dishes, mainly because ordering can be a hassle. Luckily, my friend from Yonghe took charge of ordering for us, and it turned out to be a great decision! Every dish on the table was delicious, and many of them were actually signature dishes of Feng Ji Shanghai Restaurant.

One of their must-try dishes is the Fermented Tofu Pork with Gua Bao, which is similar to Dongpo Pork. The meat was incredibly tender and bouncy, though the gua bao (steamed bun) was quite filling. Since most diners here order seafood, we went for the Crispy Soybean Cod, Crab with Vermicelli, and Stir-fried River Shrimp. Being a seafood lover myself, I absolutely enjoyed these three dishes. The presentation was also visually appealing.

Another dish we ordered was Drunken Chicken, which has a strong Shaoxing wine flavor. It might not be for everyone, but I personally liked it. We also had Yan Du Xian soup, made with pork belly, bok choy, tofu skin, and a rich white broth. The soup itself had a mild flavor, making it a great balance for the heavier dishes. The best part? You can get unlimited refills! Drink to your heart’s content.

Unfortunately, Feng Ji Shanghai Restaurant had to close for two years due to the pandemic. However, it later reopened under the name Feng Ji Private Kitchen and relocated to Da’an District, near Da’an MRT Station. If you enjoy Shanghai cuisine, you might want to visit the new location and see if the flavors are still as authentic!
