It was probably because it was the weekend that so many people were out and about. For regular folks, even if they’re not eating, drinking, or catching a movie, just strolling through a shopping district to pass the time is something to do. Crowds bring money, so stores tend to have more events on weekends than on weekdays. While wandering through an alley near a night market, I stumbled upon a market – an indoor one with air conditioning. It mainly focused on second-hand goods. Although I’m not particularly into second-hand clothing, I’ve heard that some savvy Taobao resellers specifically hunt for unique or valuable pieces in second-hand shops, spruce them up, and then sell them at a profit. It seems like a decent business. On the flip side, there’s a belief that second-hand clothing carries the history of its previous owner, which could include unfortunate circumstances like illness or death. Some people avoid wearing pre-owned clothes for this reason.

For me, I’m not overly superstitious. If the condition of the second-hand clothing is good, it’s been cleaned well, and it has a stylish look, I’m open to it—as long as the price is reasonable. There’s also a more appealing term for second-hand clothing: vintage. This term originated from Japan and is now popular among younger people. Some shops seem to think that simply branding second-hand clothes as vintage allows them to charge higher prices, but I’m not buying into that.

I took a closer look at this second-hand market and walked around. The space was bright, not too large, but comfortable, with a smooth flow of movement. Its minimalist design had that trendy vibe that young people like. Despite its small size, there was even a photo-op corner featuring some avant-garde and artsy items. This definitely caters to young women who, even if they skip eating or drinking, will never miss the chance to get a pretty photo.

Given that it’s located in a student district, it makes sense that students—who tend to have strong desires to shop but smaller budgets—are the primary customers. Most of the items at the stalls were trendy and reasonably priced, with the majority of goods clearly aimed at women. There were barely any men’s items. After circling the market, I felt a bit out of place. If there had been more products that I could actually use, I probably would’ve enjoyed browsing a lot more.
