Horror movies can be terrifying, but there are many people who enjoy watching them. Even though they’re scared to death, why do they love to watch?
According to an article in Science Alert, there’s a reason why people love horror movies. They enjoy the certainty of being “in the moment” after being scared by sound and light effects. The article mentions that fear distracts people, which can be a positive experience. When something scary happens, the human brain is in a state of high alert, so the troubles of the day’s work or the major reports of the next day are thrown to the back of the mind. The temporary fear brought about by watching horror movies has a kind of “escapist function”, diverting people’s attention from tedious things and helping them relax.
In addition, when young men and women are in the early stages of romance, watching a horror movie is a signal, a subtle means, and a common ice-breaking method for boys to pursue girls. Many boys and girls have experienced this little ambiguity. Boys choose to take girls to watch horror movies, mostly wanting to have physical contact with the girls. Under the influence of horror movies, there may be a chance to break the ice and warm up the feelings. Girls agree to watch horror movies with boys, mostly because they have some good feelings for the boys and hope to deepen their understanding and enhance their feelings by watching movies. Although the cinema is filled with a terrible atmosphere, the hearts of the two people are closer.
Fear is an early warning system that can perceive threats, win time to escape or make the fastest counterattack. A study by Sald, a professor of psychiatry and psychology at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, found that people who love horror movies are mostly thrill-seeking personality traits. This tendency to seek fresh stimulation is important for evolution. People who seek new experiences may be more likely to survive and pass on their genes. The fear of watching horror movies is like their own experience of fear. The images imagined by the brain can make the body feel real, thereby training the amygdala in a safe environment to have a quick emergency response and an undisturbed heart.
Horror movies are also a good business. Blumhouse Productions is a famous horror movie factory in the industry. The company’s movie “Insidious” was directed by James Wan, who is known as the “Ghost King” by Asian fans. The production cost is only 1.5 million US dollars, which is not worth mentioning compared to the hundreds of millions of costs of Hollywood blockbusters. But when “Insidious” was released in 2010, the global box office accumulated more than 100 million US dollars. So far, the company has released five series of movies, which are not only popular, but also a must-see list for horror movie fans.
However, fear can be fatal. Boston Brigham Women’s Hospital has received hundreds of death reports. The deceased all died suddenly when facing extreme pressure or emotional shock. In fear, the myocardium will contract in a specific form without being controlled by willpower, and cannot relax again due to the large release of stress hormones. Some experts believe that many victims in disasters may die of fear rather than trauma. Anyway, I don’t like watching horror movies. What about you?
