I noticed posters of the cholitas in my Bolivia Musical Instruments Museum photos, so today I'll share some scenes from a wrestling show I once watched in La Paz.
It was inside a small arena in El Alto, where a group of wrestlers was performing. Among them, the female cholitas drew the most attention with their feisty and entertaining fights.
Most Cholitas are from the indigenous Aymara or Quechua culture groups of Bolivia, like the general population of El Alto. On the streets, you can often see them wearing traditional bowler hats, braided hair, long shawls and multilayered skirts. Also, in the wrestling ring here.
Beginning in the middle of the 2000s, some indigenous women experiencing domestic violence started to practise wrestling as a means of empowerment and stress relief. Juan Mamami, a wrestler and Titans of the Ring president, has been promoting it into a popular attraction.
Aside from the flamboyant fighting, there was dancing outside the ring, and they invited audience members to interact with them. For me, it was a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
