谁都知道，中南海是中共中央所在地。但是北京一个内陆城市怎么会有海呢？中南海其实不是海，而是经过元明清三朝把三个自然湖串在了一起，有南海，中海，北海连在一起，环湖建了很多民居，亭台楼阁供皇家居住，辛亥革命后袁始凯，北洋政府等走马灯似地在此地办公，待中共进驻北京时这里的房屋是一片破败萧条，陈旧不堪，荒草萋萋，垃圾成堆。
建国之初百废待兴，中共中央机关，警卫，秘书，国务院等等一大批人马都住了进来。由于匆忙，只能将就，在百年变迁中的中南海实际哪有皇家园林的模样，垃圾遍地，老鼠乱穿，苍蝇横飞，门窗破败，此时一下涌入这么多的大人小孩，闹出了很多笑话。
这里随便一个警卫的小孩可以告诉别的小孩说，你们想不想见毛主席。想，于是领着一帮小孩就找到了菊香书屋见了毛主席。小孩的在中南海有上百人，都是中央机关干部的娃娃，他们上房，直至在毛主席的房顶上乱穿摘果子吃，可想当时那个热闹劲。
中南海常放电影，领袖们和大家不请自到，插在大人小孩之中，闹出很多笑话。没大没小，刘少奇进来由于灯暗，小孩们拿橡皮筋弹弓纸弹朝背后射击，刘源发现是他爸，就叫唤，别打了别打了是我爸我爸。
那时中南海孩子们和父母吃食堂，朱老总家孩子十几个，吵翻天，反正大食堂一开饭，领袖们就都在人群中找位子买饭，走哪坐哪，毫无规矩，反正那时中南海就是中央机关小孩们的天堂，进进出出如蹚平地。五大书记，领袖们真就生活在人民群众之中，大家想说什么就说什么。
那时江青人挺好，经常随便就抱着别人的小孩照象。李讷和江青治病从苏联回来，带了两部儿童自行车，孩子们在院子里抢着学，吵翻天。中南海的中小学生要出城到专门学校去读书，于是中国五零年就出现了第一辆校车，一星期来回接一次回中南海。这比美国日本的校车还早得多。
文革后中南海成了禁地，把孩子们们都迁了出去，成了圣地。
