My dear I really understand what you face as a wife, mother, friend in law...you can fill the space. A times seeing a topic I get more confused set. And these children a times will come with their attention-seeking project when you are so in the spirit of writing.
Personally what I do is to give myself some break when necessary, at other times I will try to ignore them so as to meet my target. At another time I try to make them sleep on time so that I can do a little before joining them.
About having a niche..hmmm, this is a big issue for me now, I have not seen a place of my interest, so I join contests that I feel I can. But am still searching for a place that I will be so that my passion can be pushed the more.
