Hi guys, let me tell you about what’s going on in Nigeria at the moment concerning the Twitter ban that has gone on for over 200 days. This morning, we woke up to news that Nigeria government had lifted the Twitter ban after Twitter agreed to the terms and conditions it was given.
In the press statement released today, it was inferred that Nigerian government officials will be working with Twitter staff to manage prohibited content that violates Twitter rules. They also went further to claim that law enforcement will be able to submit a report with legal justification for access to accounts where they suspect that a content violates Nigerian laws.
Full fledged Censorship Attack
At first glance, one will think this is a fully fledged censorship attack, on a second glance, this is actually a fully fledged censorship attack. It is obvious that they will do anything to have that power to control the narrative at every given chance especially as elections are getting close.
If Twitter really agreed to this, it means that they will give Nigerian law enforcement the ability to arrest people who create content that is opposing the favor of a political caucus under the guise of suspecting the content to be violating Nigerian laws. We saw a glimpse of how they operated during the #EndSars campaign.
They twisted truths, hired thugs, lied and deceived millions of other Nigerians. If Twitter agrees to their terms and conditions, they will gain the ability to delete tweets, they will gain control to direct the narrative that suits their outcome. They will lie, they will manipulate, they will make innocent people suffer.
Trust Integrity?
Whether or not Twitter agreed to their terms and condition in the way it was put out in the press statement is yet to be known, Twitter has simply only stated that it is back online in Nigeria, but everything in Twitters terms and conditions of operation fully contradicts the abilities Nigerian officials are claiming to have.
It won’t be the first, second or third or last time that the Nigerian officials will be caught in blatant lies, if it was so easy to gain such access, do you know how many countries will be using Twitter as a censorship and surveillance tool? This is what Nigerian govt wants, the ability they crave,
Censorship, Surveillance, How many people have been reported missing due to their tweets?
To use Twitter as their tool. Anyway, it’s not like they don’t already go around locking peoples bank accounts up and barging into houses at night because of tweets, they’re just trying to craft a legal method for it.
This is the danger we face with Twitter, how long will we wait till Twitter gets in bed with governments or begins to bend to their rules? We are walking on knives edge by giving Twitter so much control and power and just hoping Twitter officials acts right.
Hive - Censorship Resistant
This is why the importance of a decentralized censorship resistant social media platform cannot be over emphasized.
Genuine media outlets with genuine information are waiting to be censored before realizing that they need to move to a censorship resistant platform and grow their audience there and disseminate information there, why are they so laidback about this.
In Nigeria, we’ve seen countless times when newspapers and national television channels report news late or inaccurately, a lot of people don’t even pay attention to them anymore, for the few genuine ones out there, they are majorly reliant on mediums like Twitter, but relying on Twitter in its present centralized state is like walking on the edge of a knife.
Journalists need to wake up
Okay, let’s leave media houses out, how about journalists? How long till they get deplatformed before they discover that there’s an alternative platform that is censorship resistant that they should have been on.
We aren’t even talking about the rewards this time, the ability to publish their research on a blockchain platform that cannot censor their work supersedes whatever they’re using to broadcast and store information presently.
It is one thing to try something and condemn it due to its inability to perform, it’s another thing to not just use something and stay in the dark about it, only a dumb person is yet to realize the need for a censorship resistant platform, does it mean that, journalists know they need it,...so is it that they haven’t just discovered Hive? Or why else aren’t we seeing most of them on Hive?
It is my hope that in the nearest future, before corruption engulfs the entire media space, that genuine journalism from several places in the world will find its way to Hive blockchain and genuine journalists will find their way to Hive community.
That's extremely interesting, didn't hear about that. But yes, these are the reasons of why I am here in the first place!
Yep. Same with many of us.
I doubt if there are still private investigative journalists in this country and if there are I bet they’ve not heard of the hive blockchain platform. The Nigerian government won’t just put an end to its folly activities I must say..
The journalists are probably not fully aware of the benefits of publishing on hive blockchain, 🙂we will just tell them.
They will know eventually. We will keep trying.
This shows that Nigeria government will do anything just to shut the youth up.

As we’ve seen many times over
Nigeria itself is a problematic country. I think it is due to oil reserve, which could cause interventions to Nigeria's domestic affairs
It wouldn't be a surprise if Twitter agreed. Capital comes first as always.
Capital totally comes first. In the meantime we can only hope they act right.
