Hive Open Mic ( #openmic ) is a global community celebrating live music on Hive. Each week is a new event, encouraging musicians to share songs with an international audience.
A friend shared a music video that left a big impression on me this week. It's a song by the artist formerly known as Prince, called "Nothing Compares 2 U," featuring some special footage of this man in action. Listening, I found myself connecting to the words on a deep level, resonating with the feeling, thinking of the woman I was married to for 10 years, reflecting on our companionship, appreciating her.
After seeing Prince's music video, a friend called me to tell me about his dream, and he told me my music was "gay" to him. I decided to take that comment as a compliment, recognizing some other exemplary men who I see embracing their flowery and feminine qualities, namely Prince. So I decided to try covering his song. I hadn't ever attempted it before, so it was a chance to learn something new.
"Lindas Palabras" (Beautiful Words) is this week's theme in Hive Open Mic. I offer this cover song because its words are beautiful. The story is relatable. The sentiment is vulnerable. The artistry is respectable. I'm sharing Prince's music video below, in case you'd like to look and listen. Meanwhile, I have my own humble version of this song to share right here.

Thanks so much. I must've tried at least 20 takes, even after practicing, and it stretched me musically in all the good ways. I think this is my new favorite Prince song.
You are a master, what you do with the loop doesn't look easy at all, I think it would take me hours and hours to make it all fit together, but I guess it's a matter of practice. By the way, we rarely see you doing a cover, but when you do you know which one to choose, you have brought this song to our minds after a long time without listening to it, it's a beautiful piece. Thanks for noticing all of these details. The looping just takes practice - you would easily run and fly with that tool, I imagine. I hadn't ever beatboxed before, so I'm brand new at that, but I saw somebody do it recently and gave it a whirl. Just an amateur effort, but it works. This song is such a pleasure to play. It takes me a while to learn a new song, so I tend to practice my own songs most because I already understand the medicine in them. This Prince song gave me good medicine, recognizing where I'm at in my romance life, and assessing, and navigating... Hugs!

Aw, thank you. I've learned to love Prince over the years, after some resistance at first. This song is fantastic, and I feel so humbled by learning it and honored to carry it. Now I am forever a Prince fan, and this is one of my new favorite songs.

Yes, that girl made this song famous, I think, and her name is Sinead O'Connor. That's the version that I knew before. It dawned on me only after seeing the Prince video that this song has a special way of expressing that feeling of sadness for a loss in romance. Felt good to experience that emotion in a musical way.
