Hive Open Mic ( #openmic ) is a global community celebrating live music on Hive. Each week is a new event, encouraging musicians to share songs with an international audience.
For 2022, I'm committing to a new motivating force: Love. This will be my guiding light, moving forward. I believe this is my best way of being in the world, letting my heart lead. In other years, I've been hard-headed, battling with arrogance and impatience, thinking I could do it all and always falling short. In my experience, striving and struggling doesn't get us ahead in life, whereas love is right on time.
Here's a specific area where I'm making a radical shift: spending more quality time with my kids. Although I personally like the idea of keeping them in the public school system, with all the benefits that come from their learning and my spaciousness during the weekdays, their mom asked me to pull them out. I feel some hesitance, for sure, but I respect their mom's opinions and visions.
The schools where we live in Austin, Texas, USA, are reporting huge percentages of students and teachers testing positive for COVID right now, and so the schools are escalating their protocols, insisting on vaccinating the kids, and asking them to wear two masks. While I understand the safety concerns, I think these fears-based messages are distracting, if not dangerous, in a learning environment.
I want my kids to be open-hearted, and so I want to model open-heartedness. This week, we started a homeschooling adventure. We tried it two years ago, when school was cancelled because of COVID. This time is different, because the kids' mom and I are separated. Still I'm committed to holding my heart open, and by some miracle the kids are helping me to trust the flow and stay open.

Oh that's an interesting perspective. Yeah, one of my hands is playing a simple chord, and the other one is moving rapidly. I think with the saxophone you're using two hands to play the chords, and then somehow your mouth must be doing all of the movement. It amazes me the way you achieve all those intricate sounds within a single note, vibrating and wavering in such delightful ways.
Well, I guess we all have learnt to be comfortable with our instruments.
I visualize myself singing when blowing into the saxophone. It really helps to adjust the embouchure appropriately.

I regret the increase in Covid cases, this has been a bad start to the year for everyone, but at the same time it gives us the opportunity to be together, you have your children and the best thing is to keep them healthy but above all that they feel comfortable with the decision.
