My Introduction and experience with the Spend HBD launch:
Hello everyone, I'm excited to be part of this amazing community. My name is Joy Iquo Scott, I am from Akwa-Ibom state, Nigeria but was born and raised in Lagos State where I have lived all my life.
Growing up in Surulere Lagos, was a great experience and my childhood was filled with fun, good times, not so good times and learning periods.
I attended a French Nursery School back then of which I still got to teach in my adulthood. I still remember vividly a presentation then with a classmate as a four year old in one of the school events, this presentation was in French language and it brings a lot of fun memories.
My Primary and secondary school experience was that of great times and difficult times because we started from a period when we had a lot materially and could be termed 'rich kids' to when my parents really started to struggle financially and it was so difficult to even have a meal before going school.
In lower primary school, we were taken to and from school in a car by my dad then, we had enough and most of our needs were well catered for as my parents had well paying jobs and later ventured into business which was funded by a distant uncle then. The business started to fail when my other uncles and aunts felt so entitled and would come pick up stuff randomly at the shops claiming that it was funded by their brother. This business finally got wrecked as things were not handled well and my father had to get a job to sustain us once again. It was also a difficult time because that was when we lost one of our siblings. I was quite young so I could not really comprehend what it meant for someone to die. I remember vividly how much my mother cried and was unconsolable. Thankfully we were comforted by God, loving family and friends.
Leaving primary school and getting into secondary school started on a good note but things started becoming tough as my parents jobs could not sustain us as before. It became a lot more difficult to live and enjoy the things we were used to, we even had to move to a smaller apartment where we shared some rooms with others. It was getting more and more difficult to even feed. We were even intimidated by some neighbors because we could not afford some bills. Many times we went to school hungry and there was even no hope to come back to a meal. I remember that i had a friend then who would share her meal with me sometimes but it wasn't always easy for her because she only had a plate for herself alone and she would also get hungry before the end of school. I also had friends who would give me some money to eat as well and I'm very grateful for those friends I had back then. Sometimes I wonder how we scaled through those periods but thanks to the backing of the Almighty God. Thankfully I passed all my exams in flying colours and didn't have to redo any subjects.
Immediately after secondary school, I had to start working because of course my folks didn't have enough to send us to higher institution so we all had to struggle to get a job right after secondary education to fend for ourselves. This shaped the course of my life in the long run
I started working at a generator repair shop as a receptionist. I did that for just five days funny enough because my sister said there was another organization that needed a receptionist in Ikeja Lagos, so from Surulere I would go to Ikeja daily to work at that party place as a receptionist. Working there was not a very nice experience because my boss was always erratic, she shouted at any slight mistake made and never considered that I was just a newbie to the job market. I have never liked being shouted at and I would always cry back then as a kid if someone as much as raised his voice or shouted at me. I remember how all the other staff would run to hide once the boss was in sight.
At one time during an event I was accused of stealing some money by the people who had their child's party. I was so mad that I lost it and gave the woman some words to think about. My boss was upset with the way i spoke to the client who accused me of stealing and asked me to stay home for some time. That gave me some time to think about my next move. Thankfully I worked at that party place for only four months and started a job as a teacher in a school two houses away from mine. This was better since I didn't have to spend any transportation fare.
My new job propelled me into teaching which I do up till today. I started to work in a School now closed down, i really enjoyed my first experience as a teacher because back then in secondary school I was given lots of responsibilities as a class representative and even had to teach some friends subjects they didn't really understand. So teaching others has always being something I liked.
I got to work in that school and five other schools on the same street because I was fishing for better pay. Whenever I learned that another school paid better I would move quickly. That was how I got to work in the Nursery School I attended as a kid. It had become a Nursery and Primary School and I got to teach in one of the Primary classes. I have taught in different schools since then and I also had the opportunity to attend a higher institution and obtain my teaching qualifications as well as other certifications thankfully. I am grateful for how far I have come in life and all the experiences that has shaped me.
I got to learn about the HBD launch from a friend @beauty197 that recently and this is another exciting opportunity I want to explore fully. I have participated in the shopping experience and today I joined some members to have a meal at the restaurant. I can't wait to learn and grow in this community
