Sony Claims Price Has Not Affected PS5 Pro Sales Amid Launch
Sony Interactive Entertainment President Hiroki Totoki has dismissed concerns that the premium price of the recently launched PS5 Pro could negatively affect its market performance. The new version of Sony’s popular gaming console, released globally on October 7, was anticipated to cater to “hardcore” gaming enthusiasts. Despite initial mixed sales reports, Totoki remains confident that the PS5 Pro will thrive within this target audience, emphasizing that the price is unlikely to deter buyers.
"In terms of pricing, many people have different opinions, but we believe the price of the PS5 Pro does not have a negative impact. I don’t think it does,” Totoki said. He suggests that the high-performance features of the console, specifically aimed at dedicated gamers, justify its cost.
In markets like Brazil, where the PS5 Pro is available for R$6,999, sales appear stable. Sony reports that the console’s availability has not suffered from high demand or low inventory, a stark contrast to the original PS5's launch in 2020. At the time, the global semiconductor shortage severely limited the production and distribution of gaming consoles worldwide, leading to prolonged supply issues.
The PS5 Pro’s launch has sidestepped similar challenges, with stock readily available. However, early indicators show that the console's higher price and advanced specifications have not captured mainstream attention. Analysts predict that the PS5 Pro is likely to maintain adequate supply levels throughout the holiday season and into early 2025, contrasting sharply with the persistent shortages seen during the initial PS5 launch.
Scalpers Shift Focus Away from PS5 Pro
Unlike previous high-demand products, the PS5 Pro has not attracted the attention of scalpers – individuals or groups who buy products in bulk and resell them at inflated prices when demand surges. According to market analysts, the console’s sales trajectory has not offered the high returns typically sought by scalpers, who instead have turned their sights on the PS5's disc reader accessory.
Initially priced at $79, this external disc reader has become a popular item on secondary markets like eBay. In countries such as the United Kingdom, where stock levels have already been depleted, the disc reader is now reselling for £150 to £250, significantly above retail.
As the gaming market continues to stabilize post-pandemic, experts are watching Sony’s strategic pricing for insights into consumer response to high-performance, high-price models. With a stable supply chain and an apparent buffer from the scalper market, Sony may have successfully positioned the PS5 Pro as an option for its most dedicated fans while avoiding the pitfalls of limited stock and inflated resale prices.
