The Northern Lights in Southern New Jersey ..
Tonight, something magical happened .. A moment I’ve long dreamed about experiencing but never expected to witness here, in Southern New Jersey. The Northern Lights! Yes, you read that right. It’s one thing to see pictures, but to stand there, in my own backyard, and experience the aurora in real time was nothing short of breathtaking. The iPhone definitely caught the scene better than the eye. I wish the city lights near by weren't as bright as they are. We always thought we would have to travel farther North to see them, but luckily they are visible here tonight.
It all started when I was letting Mr. Huxley out for his usual evening pee-pee. Just as I was about to head back inside, my neighbor called over, "You have to check out the sky!" And boy, am I glad I did. I ran back in with Huxley, barely able to contain my excitement, and told my wife to grab her shoes and come outside. We stood there, staring at the sky, wrapped in wonder. At least until the night chill got the best of us.
Watching those shimmering lights dance across the night, right above our heads, felt surreal. One big check off the bucket list, and right here at home. Totally worth the spontaneous sprint to the backyard!
My son called from work nearby and said go look. But the city lights 10 mins away diluted them. I tried to get a photo, but neither camera, phone, nor operator was able. Yours are wonderful!
Yes, it was really hard to get a good shot but they were visible. Nicer through the photograph than with the naked eye. We are also surrounded by lots of light pollution. One of these days will travel up north and get a good view of them. That's probably the best place to go.
Very nice! We headed out to see them as well. I have a lot of photos I need to edit!
Yeah it was unexpected I suppose. Unexpected to see it in our area since were surrounded by major cities like New York, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, Baltimore, Washington DC. Lots of light Pollution surrounding us. Did you post the photos on your blog? I'll have to swing over there take a look.
Yeah, I posted some of them. Oddly enough, it almost seems like the lights have been so intense that we have been too far north to really appreciate them during the past couple of storms. I have seen people saying you actually had to look south to get the more intense colors.
Yeah I hear you. Same here. Like I said the phone actually captured in pretty well but with our naked eye it was more of just a hazy pink and green. Definitely could see the colors just not any kind of movement or lines like you see some videos and pictures of people who live in Canada or Iceland.
Yeah, for sure. I think a lot of those videos that people post are actually time lapsed photos. With my phone in video mode I wasn't able to see anything. It sounds like we might get some more chances within the next year.
I was expecting the comet hehe! Didn't you take a photo of it?
You know, I looked for that comet for several nights straight and could not find it or see it. Other people in the area to get photographs of it but I guess it's just too bright due to the city lights where we live.
Privilege you have had and you have completed your desire. Wonderful photos and from your own backyard. By sharing them I have enjoyed them too, thank you. 🤗
It was a really nice surprise. Glad we were able to see it! 😊
What's next on the bucketlist ?
Skydiving!? 😖😆
