Houseplants in Bloom
As Thanksgiving approaches .. The shorter days and colder weather settling over the Northeast often bring a touch of melancholy. But amidst the season’s chill, there’s a special kind of joy blooming inside our home .. LITERALLY. The vibrant flowers appearing around the house are a heartwarming reminder of nature’s resilience and beauty, offering a much-needed boost to our spirits as we prepare to spend more time indoors.
A Long-Awaited Orchid Display
Let’s start with the Vanda Orchid I wrote about recently. She’s nearly ready to steal the show! Her plump purple buds are so close to opening that I check on her daily, eagerly anticipating the moment those first petals unfurl. It’s been a long journey of nurturing and patience, and the reward is just around the corner. Orchids have a way of making you work for their beauty, but when they bloom, the payoff feels magical.
A Kitchen Brightened by Blooms
Next up is our Thanksgiving Cactus, which is living up to her name in spectacular fashion. She’s currently in full bloom, her bright pink flowers lighting up the kitchen with their cheerful hues. The timing couldn’t be better .. Just when we need a little extra color during these gray November days. Every year, the long wait for her to bloom feels entirely worth it when she finally bursts to life.
A Sentimental African Violet
Over in the living room, a purple African Violet given to us by my mom last year is also showing off her flowers. This little plant has grown so much since we inherited her, adding new leaves and now a crop of vibrant buds. A couple of weeks ago, while my parents were visiting, my mom was delighted to see the new growth. Watching her reaction made the blooms feel even more special .. A quiet connection to family, growth, and shared moments.
The Peaceful Glow of a Lily
Our Peace Lily adds a different kind of charm to the mix. She may not be the most robust plant in the house right now, but her single bloom catches the morning sunlight perfectly, like a spotlight on nature’s understated elegance. Despite her struggles, she continues to produce one or two blooms each month—a gentle reminder of perseverance and beauty in simplicity.
A Resilient Hibiscus
The Hibiscus Tree is another standout, even if she’s looking a bit thin after transitioning indoors from the patio. Last winter, I moved her to the basement for hibernation, but this year she’s staying upstairs in the dining room—for now. Despite dropping some leaves, she’s still managing to bloom, proving just how determined plants can be. Her delicate flowers are a welcome sight, even as she adjusts to the cooler, drier air of the house.
And Of Course Huxley
While all this plant care keeps me busy, there’s always time for a little chaos courtesy of Mr. Huxley. During a recent visit from my niece and nephew, he decided to swipe her slipper, right in the middle of a game of fetch. Ironically, it seems I’m the one doing the fetching these days! Life with a puppy is full of surprises, but it’s all part of the fun.
This season, our blooming plants have become more than just décor.. They’re a source of joy, inspiration, and even a little humor amidst the everyday hustle. As the days grow colder and darker, their vibrant colors and resilient spirits remind us to look for the light, wherever it may bloom.

I’m not a house plant guy. But good for you. He’s cute, my girls dog loves her slippers as well. Nothing else just her slippers. You tease, whatcha got there…..
You and @bozz .. The "Brown Thumbs" of the stackers! haha.
Man.. he doesn't go after a lot but slippers with the fur he LOVES!
I like to tease 😁
I really do love that Thanksgiving Cactus. The color on the flowers are just amazing. I don't think I have seen anything that deep magenta before. It's pretty amazing. Haha, I'm glad to see Huxley is keeping you on your toes!
It really is a unique color.. very bright. We LOVE IT 😍
He is definitely doing that. Ugggg the puppy stage. We do see he is slowly starting to chill out. I think. lol
That's good to hear. Before long you will miss these days!
I came here for the Huxley, and stayed for the orchids and silver.
I been there man. Trust me. 😆
So many lovely flowers! My Thanksgiving cactus has buds, but I had to light the masonry heater in the living room. One thing I've found is that they bloom much better when it's cooler. So I may not get so many flowers.
Yes, I found mine likes bright sun but not direct sun, a light once per week watering, and cooler temps in sept and oct to promote nov blooms. Even if I see one bloom I am happy, but she is giving us a ton this year.
If there are animals in life, life becomes much more beautiful, the time of playing with them is also very good and we have many benefits to have such plants in the house. I am also trying to do the same. I must keep it.
Plants and puppies.. Who could ask for more? 😁
Your Thanksgiving Cactus is simply stunning @bdmillergallery!
As for Mr. Huxley, I still think he steals the show, that haughty look and those eyes are enough to melt any heart!

Orchids dry up when they come through the door of my house, hahaha, they are difficult to care for, worse than a bonsai
