Memories from Childhood

Every since my father passed away over 15 years ago... my mother has been thinking about moving to be closer to her children. We grew up in Perth, on one side of Australia... and that is where my father and mother had landed when they moved to Australia many many decades ago... and it is where they have their friends. But as time passed, she saw many of her friends getting older... and her family was no longer there. I was in Europe, and my brother was on the Eastern side of Australia.

... and when we returned back to Australia, we also settled on the Eastern side of Australia as that had more allure for work and the extended family.

That meant that she was alone on the western side, but she was still able to travel and would do so quite often.

But recently, she had been talking more and more about moving... but not really doing it. And then on a recent visit to some of her extended family overseas, she saw how they were all getting older, and to the point where they needed a good deal of care.. and that most importantly, they weren't able to travel anymore. And she was the youngest of her family...

... and so, with incredible purpose, she decided that she was ready to move to the Eastern side of Australia... whilst she was able to do it on her own steam, and able to enjoy years with us.

And wow, since solidifying the decision a few months back... she has had work done on the family house to prepare it for selling... and removed all the old furniture, moved the tenants on from the old house that sits on the same block, and completed some small repairs on that house as well. And now, she is already meeting with real estate agents to get the house on the market... all in the space of a few months!

Well, I guess that does sort of run in the family... when we made our decision to move from Europe back to Australia, we basically did it within a year... from the decision to setting the final date and then bam, it was all done without dawdling.

But as she has been doing all of that... she has been sending us updates, and photos... and it has been a bit of a trip down memory lane... the old furniture, all the bits and pieces that we had sat, hid behind, and climbed upon as kids...

... and the old house, that we lived in... and after my younger brother was born, my parents built and then moved into the new half.

It has been quite nostalgic seeing all these things... my brother will be there with his family in a couple of weeks (for work...) but unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'll be able to make it as we have a flat out schedule until April... and it looks like it might all be over by then.

The last time that I had felt this (apart from our own move...) was when I was helping to collect and pack away my father's things. That was quite a process....

... anyway, it is the end of another chapter... and the start of a new one. Eventually though, we will have to return... as my father's ashes are there, and I assume that the plan will be that they stay there.

Wow, that has to be really hard. My wife and I decided to move to a city that is about fifteen minutes in the middle from each of our parents to my parents are east and her parents are west. It works out pretty well as they are getting older and need more stuff done. It will be good to have your mom closer.

Yep, it will be nice to have her closer by... but not too close! And it is good that she decided to do it before it got too difficult.

Haha, I hear you!

Making such a tough decision is quite impressive.
Acting on it is more impressive...

Leaving a home of memories for her would be quite hard, still it's rather necessary..

Yes, I think it is quite a difficult move... from all her friends (even if they are getting fewer) and everything that she knows... to a completely new place and new life.

Modern life one goes where the work is, parents set down roots in the hope the children will inherit. Comes a time we do realize time to move! Great your Mom has taken the decision and making progress.

Really wish things moved quicker here, alas I am still busy waiting....
