Recreation in Older Age
This is something to be valued. Not everyone knows how important play is in our lives. It's not an activity exclusive to childhood. We can practice it throughout our lives, whether physical or intellectual. But recreational activities: dominoes, chess, checkers, word searches, crossword puzzles, mahjon, riddles, jigsaw puzzles, and others, are so useful throughout life.
Reaching old age with a hobby is a great advantage because we can use our free time, which is more common now that we're retired and have fewer responsibilities, to do what we love. There are families who get together to play cards, bingo, Scrabble, among others. They set aside a specific day for this. I think it's great.
I always pass a corner where I see an elderly gentleman whom I knew years ago and who now, because he's older, sits at the door of his house most of the time. I greet him, and he responds in a very soft voice. I've seen him in the same routine for years. There are many young people and children around him, but he doesn't seem to participate in anything that's being said or done there. I know other people who have a cheerful spirit despite their age. One of them entertains herself by watching videos on her phone, but I also know other elderly people who didn't dedicate time to a particular hobby and now can't find anything else to do. They even complain to their children because they don't want to be alone because they get bored. Despite being healthy and independent, some only watch television, but that leads them to sit for long periods of time.
In my case, I've been noticing that my legs are getting very weak. I don't know if it's because of my thyroid problem, or if age definitely brings that added benefit. I don't like being sedentary; I go for walks in the afternoons and sometimes in the mornings too.
My main hobby right now is Hive, which keeps me reading and writing. I only play dominoes with others; I'm not one to get upset when I lose. I understand the game pretty well, and I like to play for fun, not competition. I have several game apps downloaded on my phone. When the power's out, I solve puzzles or play trivia; I really enjoy this. Now I also want to get back into musical instruments like the cuatro or the guitar, which I've been practicing for a while.
I also watch series and read books; I have many in digital format, and it's definitely the best way to enjoy myself for a long time.
Thank you for your kind reading

There's a lot we can do to keep busy, board games and puzzles are great!
Walking is one of the best medicines, so keep on doing that.
Great advice @charjaim
Thank you. I think we should always stay active and continue enjoying the beauty of life. Hugs.
Walking, sharing with friends, enjoying a good book, soft music. Having a good cup of coffee while the sun goes down, a good film. I love crossword puzzles.
Yes, those are good recreational activities. I got a good crossword puzzle app on my phone and I really like it. I'm looking for multi-piece puzzles; I like them too, but these are physical ones. Cheers.
