Somehow, we have made it all the way to the month of December. What I would like "for Christmas" is for December to be a good month for everyone!
I say this, because I am just plain tired of the feeling of "disappointed." Whereas I know we largely get to choose how we feel about things, you sometimes reach a point of "maximum saturation" where it becomes difficult to break out of a slump without some kind of external positive factor as impetus.
When I was a little kid — which probably holds true for lots of people — reaching December was always exciting because it was the "Christmas month."
We got to be off from school for a while, and we got to decorate the house, and there was lots of food and presents, of course, although those were not that important to me... I guess the whole "the best things in life are not THINGS" idea was imprinted on me at a very early age.
Christmas cookies, However? That was a whole different kettle of fish!
In working life — especially after I got into the retail store business — December was always meaningful, because it typically the time when we made up for an entire year of losses and (relative) disappointments because things had not worked out as well as planned.
December was reliable. People might have chosen not to shop all year long, but as we closed in on Christmas they tended to capitulate and go shopping "after all," even if it had not been their original intention.
December 2024 will hopefully be better than most months because we have a couple of Holiday fairs to go to with our respective creative endeavors. I have always enjoyed holiday fairs (as a vendor) because — once again — people are more likely to feel like they have to buy something.
Maybe that sounds a bit mercenary, but this is part of our livelihood, we're talking about.
Now that a number of years have passed since I was in the store business, I am starting to enjoy Christmas again.
The commercial circus that everyone seems to get so wrapped up doesn't mean as much to me as more "traditional" things like — for example — we actually hand write and send Christmas cards by old fashioned snail mail!
Baking cookies — including some of the old Danish recipes I grew up with — also have a comfortingly nostalgic feel to them, aside from which I always felt like the food of the holidays was just about the best and most important thing!
Another somewhat nostalgic thing I have long enjoyed is hand making ornaments... it was something we did when I was a kid, and I still enjoy it. There's just something more personal about it than just buying a big box of very "loud" sparkly stuff.
Unlike many, we don't tend to decorate the house particularly early... 2nd week of December is pretty typical, for us. Works out pretty well, anyway, as we typically have these holiday fairs to go to... so we're too busy "doing other stuff."
So... let's hope we all have a really excellent December, and that it is better than expected!
