Sunday Reflection — Time: Our Most Precious Commodity?

in Silver Bloggers4 days ago

If you're anything like me, I'm sure you have used the phrase ”I just don't have time for that” on plenty of occasions.

I found myself thinking about that phrase, as I was finishing the cleaning up after our traditional annual junk food fest that is part of watching the Super Bowl. Neither Mrs. Denmarkguy nor I are particularly interested in football but we do take a little time out to watch this particular spectacle every year.

Perhaps the thing that makes me contemplate this statement of not having enough time for something it's the realization that I find myself using that particular statement a lot more often than I recall doing 25-30 years ago.

The only logical conclusion I can draw from that is that either I've gotten slower at doing things — entirely possible, I suppose — or I just have a growing number of things on my plate to fit into the available 24 hours, which I know for a fact have not changed since 25-30 years ago.

In some ways, I suppose I am more tuned in to what consumes my time than most people, because I find it disproportionately more enjoyable to have time to do nothing at all, as compared to those people who really enjoy being busy all the time.

These days, it's a very rare treat to actually have slack time where I can just sit still and stare into space.

I suppose I am also more tuned into this particular dilemma given that I am now within five years of what historically would be considered retirement age, a concept typically associated with entering a phase of your life where you stop working and instead ”play with your hobbies” during what is ostensibly your ”golden years.”

Absent some unplanned miracle, that is not something I see us becoming part of my reality. Most likely, I will be working in some capacity or another until I keel over dead.

At the same time, I am very grateful for the fact that even if I do end up working for the rest of my life, at least I will be doing things I enjoy because I have created a life in which I basically work with my hobbies. I don't necessarily make much of a living from doing so, But hopefully it will be enough of a living that we don't have ”cat food spaghetti” in our future!

That said, I'm pretty sure I can wave goodbye to my one time intention of taking up golf again having previously abandoned the game — in my 30’s — precisely because I didn't have enough time.

Lest it sounds like I'm depressed here, let me assure you that I'm not. I suppose I'm just being realistic, rather than overly optimistic and delusional.

Mrs. Denmarkguy and I have a thing we often say to each other when we're about to start on a project, a trip, or some kind of event: ”and may it be better than expected!”

And who knows, maybe it will turn out to be better than expected!

Thanks for coming to visit my blog, and I hope you have a great week ahead!

Time is a luxury we tend to respect far more as we age, never stopped to consider taking up new hobby or sport, simply keep taking walks enjoying what we do have.

Planning holidays of late have landed on the back burner under circumstances, although still itchy feet to see and do more.

Finding enjoyment in what you currently spend time on is of the utmost importance keeping mind active and body in good health, simply cannot afford medical bills.

I'm in a middle age, and when I talk about time, death, and things like this; my friends look at me wiredly. But this is something comes often in my mind. I agree time is on the top of our commodity list. The funny thing is, we don't pay attention. Like me, I don't know how I came this long way up untill now and take my life seriously.
I too have the desire to work and be as I long as I can.
Good to read your post.
