We were supposed to have had burgers for supper. I was all organised. Or so I thought having taken the mince out of the deep freeze on Monday. I had actually planned to make them then. Good thing I didn't because 24 hours later the mince was still frozen. At 6pm.
In my defense, I have been a little distracted: a friend is going for an investigative procedure on Thursday and the day before, may eat no solids.
This ia some of how our WhatsApp conversation went:
Fiona darling
Apparently on Wednesday all I can consume over 24 hours is
Water
Tea
Apple juice
And chicken broth
What is chicken broth and where can I buy it?
I can't go for 24 hours on just water tea and apple juice 😞
...
Strained chicken broth
Needless to say, some basic explanations followed, a shopping list drawn up and the critical ingredient - chicken - delivered on Monday. What followed was a total of about 7 hours of cooking. First, with all the bits in the pot, like carrots, herbs, garlic, onion and, of course, chicken. After that cooled, I strained it through muslin and then reduced the remaining broth for another two or so hours before canning it in sterilised jars.
They were collected while they were still piping hot.
I went back to the office and got on with the day and at 6pm realised that I had misjudged and there was no plan B.
Fortunately, there is one spot where one can get a bite on a Tuesday.
As I went to open the gate, Guineafowl family were going to bed.
It was a glorious evening after the day's 38°C (95,5°F) heat.
We still had burgers. And I had an unexpected night off and an early night. And now, a very early morning. But that could be a story for another time.
Until next time, be well
Fiona

Thank you so much @rem-steem!
Mince, that reminds me that I need to get shopping and get some mince, I fancied some burgers too!
I thought your plan B getting something to eat was going to be one of the Guineafowl😮
You see what thought did? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes I did haha
What was the old McDonalds theme? "You deserve a break today!" Haha but I might have had the guinea fowl in the pot! 😱
Ummm...we didn't have that McDondalds theme here... I think the chicks are a little skinny and the adults, well, knowing how much they run, a case of wine wouldn't tenderise them, and well, that's not an instant cook, either! lol
Not that I like the idea of eating "our" chooks. I'd not make a very good stock farmer... 🤦♀
When you said yesterday you messed up the dinner, I thought it would be more serious. In the end, you had hamburgers, which look delicious, but what strikes me the most is the bread, it looks like a ciabatta. And I guess you baked it yourself, right?
Nope. I didn't make the burgers or the bread - we ate from the food truck. I think they call those pannini. I admit it was good to have a night off, seeing a few people and watching the sun set.
Oh okay. I thought that you bought just the burger's meat. So a complete night off sounds like a cool plan, glad you enjoyed it.
I did. With wine...I'll be making burgers on Friday, though... watch this space lol
I love chicken broth, I think it helped your friend a lot, I hope everything goes well in his medical checkup.
The burgers look delicious, at least you didn't go to bed without eating one.
Hahaha! At least he had some nutrition. I think he's a little over the bland, liquid diet and if he has it again, it'll be too soon! We are waiting for test results, but early signs are good.
You are just the most considerate woman Fiona, your friend is very lucky to have had such a good chicken broth!

Hope it all turns out well for him.
I just love the pic with the guineafowl family up in the tree! My Mom must have cut out thousands of guineafowl for Sizanani, their church's sewing skills training centre, so I've always had a soft spot for them.
My little denim bag that's faded over the years.
S's tests: well one condition's ruled out and they're testing for others. The results of the biopsies next week. 🤞
That bag is just gorgeous...xxx
