RE: Memoir Monday #48 What Simple Pleasures Bring You Joy?

I grow most of mine from seeds but when I cut them back I save the cuttings. They are one of the easiest plants to grow from a cutting, just do not overwater, and let the soil dry out between waterings. To dry ok, too wet, death.

This is how I do it.

I use a razor and trim the green around the part that goes into the ground about 1/4 inch. I cut a piece of aloe and rubbed the cut end in the aloe juice. I have a pot ready to put it in and dig a hole big enough for the cutting, put it in the hole deep enough for it to stand or if it is too big you have to have a stick to tie it to, push soil around it, and give it a small amount of water. I give more water when needed. Where I took the cutting from the mother plant, I cover that cut with cinnamon, it keeps bugs out.

This is what Google says to do

A desert rose cutting can take two to eight weeks to root. The time it takes depends on the conditions and care you provide.
Steps for rooting a desert rose cutting
In spring or summer, cut a healthy stem that's at least 8 cm long.
Let the cut end dry for a couple of days.
Dip the cut end in rooting hormone.
Place the cutting in a small pot with a well-draining cactus and succulent potting mix.
Keep the cutting in a warm, bright place.
Water the cutting enough to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
Check the cutting for roots by gently pulling on it. If there's resistance, roots are developing.

They are so easy to grow and keep an eye on the mother plant, you might get seed pods filled with more seeds.

To make them have the bonsai look, when I repot I put them in the bonsai pot but I leave most of the underground part, now above ground depending on the plant, 1/4 to 1/2 the rootball will now be above the ground and once a year, I lift it out of the pot and put new soil in it and put the plant back on top with more soil put around it.

I hope that helps, there are also lots of videos if you Google desert rose propagation.
