Another hike I have been meaning to do for some time is Chimney Rock. It is located above the Lower Crooked Wild and Scenic River in Central Oregon. While it is a short hike, about 2.6 miles round trip, the first part of the journey is mostly up hill with a couple pretty steep spots. Hopefully I've got my @oldmans legs in good enough shape to make this. 😁
Leaving the trail head my trusty Jeep is the only rig there so I should have the trail to myself heading up.
I quickly start to gain some elevation above the canyon floor.
My last view of the river for awhile as I turn to head up the ravine to gain some more elevation.
My target, Chimney Rock, is on the other side of that tall mesa.
I will have to continue up the ravine to gain enough elevation to reach the top of the mesa.
Some of the lichen covered rock formations as I continue my ascent. |

The wildflowers were a little sparse on this hike but still stood out on the desert landscape
The rock formations were many and quite spectacular.
A look back down the trail where I came from. The plateau I need to reach still looks pretty high to this hiker with already tired legs. 😅
Getting closer.
My first view of one of the Cascade Mountain Peaks. The top of Mt Bachelor in the distance.
As I round the end of the ravine to start the last steep climb to the top of the mesa I find some 40-50 foot cliffs.
After a short steep ascent I'm pretty much done with the uphill part of the trek. A welcome bench gave me a place to sit and rest and enjoy a snack. And also enjoy the views of the river below and the Central Oregon Cascades in the distance.
My first view of Chimney Rock.
Another welcome bench to sit and relax while enjoying my tranquil surroundings.
As I sit on the bench a look to my right...
And a look to the left.
A couple of using my remote shutter release. I've been wanting to do this for a while and finally got it done. lol.
A last look before my descent.
The river below.
A pano of three shots stitched together in LIghtroom of the Cascades.
An interesting rust and white spots on the rocks.
A small cave high up near the top of the mesa.
From the river below a look back up at where I have been.
A selfie of yours truly wearing readers over sunglasses. Haha. The pitfalls of being a sexagenarian trying to read your phone. 🤪
A look at the route I took.

Your old legs seem to be doing pretty well. What a splendid place to visit. There's only one way to get the pictures you got and that's to take an adventure like this one. Remote places are always the perfect areas to hike. The peacefulness of a place like this allows one to reflect on life.
Chimney Rock reminds me of Devil's Tower in Wyoming.
Great post.
Thank you!
This was an early test for the legs. Usually if I take some short rests I will do okay. Those rests though give me the opportunity to do the reflection and reacquaint myself with nature. 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for sharing some beautiful area with me.
Amazing views on this hike, geographical structure ever changing when a river runs through.
Yeah, just driving the canyon can be a visual feast. 😀
Always enjoy seeing places like this, change of lighting or simply the views.
For sure.

Such stunning landscape. Thank you sharing it with us @oldmans. I hope this finds you well xxx
You're welcome. Thank you for stopping by. Hope all is well with you and your family.😀
Legit!
This reminds me of a place I go to here, Flinders Ranges, South Australia. (Yours seems better though.)
Very cool! I have come to love the high desert type terrain. The openness and wide open views intrigue me. 🙂
You'd like the Flinders Ranges then, no doubt.
Probably would. Do you have a post about it?
Yeah loads of them...but I've posted an average of 1.5 times every day since June 13th 2017 so scrolling back to them would take a million years.
Many are in my community, outdoors and more. I also use photos from there for otter posts here and there.

Lol. No kidding, finding a post is not very easy. Inleo has a search that works a little better plus they are working on AI to aid that also but still not pretty.
If you are interested there is a daily threadcast on Inleo from the #photographers community. Great place to share your one off photos. Always looking for more photographers. 🙂
The new threadcast for today isn't up yet but here is a link to yesterday's if you are interested. https://inleo.io/threads/view/sergiomendes/re-leothreads-3a5usav9m
I'll take a look. Cheers.
