I've never been 68 years old before, and I don't know how a 68-year-old woman is supposed to behave. Everyone ages at a different rate. Some people my age just sit around and knit. Others go hiking in the mountains. I guess I am somewhere in the middle.
My grandchildren are still quite young, so we go sledding down our hill when they come to visit. I realized climbing up that hill was really good exercise, so I have gone sledding by myself when the grands weren't here. And I wonder how odd it is for a gramma to go sledding all by herself.

More recently I borrowed snowshoes and gave that a try. I had never used snowshoes before and quickly discovered it's not the same kind of movement as walking in snow or downhill skiing. I find I need to keep my feet farther apart than I'm used to, and must be careful not to step on the other snowshoe when trying to turn. I've only been out on them three times, including today, but the second time already felt much less awkward than the first. I did not go very far, as I did not wish to overdo. I am very much out of shape, and I know it.

The past two days were very rainy, so the snow is settling rapidly and is completely gone in the driveway where my husband plowed the snow. I wasn't sure how the snowshoeing would go today, but it went quite well. As you can see the sun was shining, albeit feebly. I really wanted to soak up a little sunshine. The thin cloud cover may have diluted it, but it was still a sunbeam.

I am glad I went outside when I did earlier today. Now that I am in the house and working on this post, the sky has clouded over and the sunbeam is gone. I sure am looking forward to spring.
I am simply impressed by the activity of a 68 years-old woman. I am sure you are pretty younger at your heart and that's what gives you courage and strength to be physically active in the snow.

Thank you! I do make an effort to remain young at heart. I really don't want to slow down until I absolutely have to.
That's impressive and inspiring

Apparently it's good for us oldies to try new things as it promotes plasticity in the brain. My motto is if you can, do it!
I like that approach!
I think the most stupid saying I used to hear was act your age. Do what makes you feel good I say. I know in past generations people would do what society dictates what 60 70 or 80 yearolds do. So yeah 68 or 28 go sledding on your own because it's the right thing to do.
I remember my uncle went tobogganing with us kids until we moved to another state. I was probably 15 the last time we did that together and he was probably 58. I have recently wondered whether he kept it up on his own after that. I never thought to ask him while he was still alive.
Well, why not go sledding by yourself? You used to, presumably, as a child. so why not now? I'm not sure I believe in age-appropriate things, or if I do, I think they depend heavily on the person being that age, you know? In which case, the question is not what is appropriate ar 68, but what is appropriate at 68 for you? :)
I appreciate your attitude toward age!
Whether you go sledding alone or visit someone's house and swing on their children's swing while they are at school, it is whatever makes you smile. You are only a few months older than me.
Snowshoes seem like they would be tricky to learn. That is a lot of snow, we got down to the fifties but it is warming back up now.
I know you would still be out fishing if your body would cooperate, so I figure a little sledding isn't a bad thing. Wow,fifties sounds great. We haven't gotten UP to there yet.

Every stage is something new for us to explore. Stepping outside of our house and exploring a bit more can help us clear our thoughts too. Somehow new realizations or perspective come out, too. When spring comes, you get to enjoy different activities outdoor. Someday, maybe you would enjoy skiing with the grands. From sledding to skiing. ☺️
I've been wondering whether I could still ski without hurting myself. I learned how to ski in my 40s, and only did it for a few years. I have not been on skis for nearly 20 years. I was never very skilled at it, so am reluctant to have a go at it again after all this time. We'll see!
Oh, 20 years, been a long time. It is better to be safe; it is not worth the risk. Sledding and enjoying the beautiful scenery will do for now. 😉
You are the second granny this week who told me that she goes sledding on her own! I'll have to give it a try.
The few times I tried showshoes, I felt like a clod and didn't get very far. I suppose if I had to trek in deep snow I would use them, but given a choice, I'll stick to cleared paths and good snow boots.
