There was a shared experience kind of vibe that I miss.
It is certainly not the UK that I grew up in where we felt communal.

You are so right. I seem to remember us chatting in the past about how New Years Eve used to be, for example, open doors at every house in the street, a full table of food and drinks at each and everybody used to move from house to house so that no ones efforts went to waste and each got a chance to host.
At 6am we would finish up and head off to bed, often forgetting we had locked the front door, coincidentally, we didn't have 16 deadbolts on the front door or an intricate system of multi phase laser beams that would test that teeny tiny Mr Cruise in the Mission Impossible movies.
