One of my favourite things about South Africa is how a very short drive can transport you into the heart of nature. Within a few hours, you can find yourself surrounded by wildlife, immersed in the peacefulness of a secluded reserve. Mabalingwe is one of those special places for me — a sanctuary not too far from home.
For our honeymoon we spent one week in mabalingwe and my favourite part of every day was sitting together on the balcony enjoying the view of the birds in the trees.
Tell me why this photo looks like a disappointed parent about to give a lecture?
One particular afternoon, we had a special visitor—a striking yellow-billed hornbill. With his bold personality and oversized beak, he quickly stole the spotlight as he hopped between tree branches, the balcony railing, and finally the floor, where he discovered a few rogue pieces of apple. Watching him snack at such close proximity was fascinating, and capturing his antics through my lens made the moment even more special.
I have never met a bird with more personality than this guy! 😂
Bird watching is one of my favourite activities, it is something so relaxing. Every bird I've seen has such unique personalities as well! I think this hornbill figured out I was photographing him and he started to pose for me which made the experience so much more fun.
