SMAP Contest Round 39: A brief. A scoop. A squadron. A pouch. A pelican party!

in Feathered Friends3 years ago

Every week @nelinoeva hosts a fun contest in the Feathered Friends Community. This week's theme is Flock.

I present to you this flying flock of Brown Pelicans.

Yes, these are real pelicans! They are not crows in pelican costumes.

Pelicans are near the top of the list of birds that I appreciate based upon how odd they are.
If the big neck pouch, short legs, and stubby tail aren't enough to make you think they're weird, then have a listen to what a Brown Pelican sounds like.

Other names for a pelican flock are:

Brief
Pouch
Scoop
Squadron
Fleet (if they are fishing)

These guys weren't fishing.

Brown Pelicans tend to hang out with groups of other birds that eat small fish.
Like Herring Gulls.

I'm not sure why, but then again, birds of a feather-- cough -- flock together. Or birds of a fish, in this case.
Oh, and in case you're interested, this is what a flock of seagulls sounds like.

Brown Pelicans are migratory, so they were only on the Oregon Coast for the summer. As I write this, they are probably headed south. But I'm glad that I got a brief moment with this pouchy scoop of pelicans.

Thanks for checking out my entry to the #smap contest! You can use the link at the beginning of the post to see the rules if you want to enter. It ends Sunday, so you still have plenty of time to find your flock.

Are you sure those are pelican sounds and not squealing pig sounds?

Actually, I think it was that guy in the beginning choking on a fish bone while trying to read out the catalog number.
"Close enough."

He died doing what he loved.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

wow lots of nice photos and not a single crow

😄Yesssssssss thanks for noticing. That's the reputation I want.

Fantastic entry!
I have not heard pelicans before. That was weird. 🙂
Fascinating birds.

Thank you! Aren't they bizarre? They sound like a bunch of screamy, cranky little old bejowled men.

Hahaha, I could not say it better. 😂
Although for me the sound was like some extra terrestrial being.
