I wonder what they think
sea birds singing their songs
and I cannot understand a word
Recently, I walked down between the rocks and I stumbled upon a couple of sea birds. It never gets old, the beauty of these birds always take my breath away.
The African Black Oystercatcher, a bird that was threatened for a while but now on the Least Concerned list, always strikes me as the most beautiful.
I stood on the rocks for a while just to watch them, just to listen to them. I love their call, as it always reminds me of the ocean, especially the late afternoons when life starts to slow down, and the sun starts to set.
Their stark black colour, the orange eyes, are always a striking image as you walk on the beach or between the rocks.
I am sure I am not the only one to realise the importance of these birds, and I am sure I am not the only one who is happy that their numbers are rising. It always saddens me when I see dogs on the beach without leashes close to these birds and their nests. But let us hope that the owners take more responsibility.
As I watched the two or three birds, one of them flew away. The three photographs below illustrates this event. Can you see the bird flying? It almost blends in with the sea grasses on the rocks.
As I saw these birds flew away, a small Cape Wagtail and their friend walked all over the seagrass the washed ashore. These small birds are just as beautiful and always reminds me of the small coastal town I grew up in on vacations. There were always Cape Wagtails running up and down the lawn and close to the ocean. Now, I saw two of them having the time of their life!
As I emerged from the rocks and boulders next to the beach, I saw a couple of gulls chilling on the beach, minding their own business.
In the end, I was treated with a bunch of sea birds, the most beautiful of them all, dancing and singing for me. I enjoyed the brief moment a bit too much, or can one ever enjoy it too much?
In any case I hope that you have some birds or feathery friends in your area that you can appreciate.
For now, happy birding and keep well!
All of the musings and writings are my own. The photographs are also my own, taken with my Nikon D300.
It looks small from the shots but it seems to be a strong bird if attacked by predators.
I love those red beaks of it. Could be a good tool for picking up fishes.
Thank you so much! I agree. They are mighty fishers, and I think they are also strong birds.
Thank you so much!
birds like the African Black Oystercatcher must be so magical, especially with their unique colors and calls. It reminds me of the times I spend at the beach.
They are indeed so special and magical! Thank you so much. Their screams always remind me of the beach.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the community!
