Bee Eaters - One of the most colorful birds here in Austria

During Summer time there are some places in eastern and southern Austria where Bee Eaters breed and If you know one of them it is worth a visit. I always like to watch these colorful birds very much. Along with the kingfishers these are probably the most colorful birds around here. They build very impressive holes for breeding in the sand and when breeding they do a lot of insect catching around these holes and often rest on trees that stand nearby. Thats why it is a great advise to wait near a nearby tree or grapewine to take some pictures of them. If you get to know some breeding holes try to stay away as far as possible to not disturb them too much. Long lenses like the 600mm I am using are advisible.

These birds are really good insect hunters and they can catch bees, flies and dragonflies in the Air. Because their flight manouvers can be really exhausting they often rest on different trees or shrubs that are a bit exposed. These spots are the perfect places where I try to take the pictures of these birds.
