Some pictures of Macaws

Macaws are a group of New World parrots that are long-tailed and often colorful, I was able to take some pictures of this beautiful birds at the Zoo in Schmiding / Upper Austria. Back in 2017 I still visited Zoos for some photography but till several years now I don't visit any Zoos anymore for animal photography, I like photography of wild living animals much more than animals that live imprisoned at Zoos. But I have to admit if you want to get some closeup pictures of birds and other animals, it is way easier at zoos when the animals cannot flee from you.

On the other hand, I find it very sad that such beautiful animals are caught and kept imprisoned. I am looking forward to visit Costa Rica or some other countries where I can find these beauties in wildlife. I know this is difficult because they could be very shy, especially when not used to humans but seeing them in the Jungle would be great.

Here in Costa Rica you can find scarlet macaws in freedom throughout the central Pacific, beaches like Manuel Antonio, Jacó, Herradura, Hermosa, are excellent places. The green macaws are more difficult to find, but there are areas such as Tortuguero and Sarapiquí where they can be observed.

Thanks for your input.

I got to see everything that I was hoping to see when I visited Belize.... except Macaws. They are so beautiful. I understand the purpose of zoos, and it is the only way I could ever see some of the animals that live in far away places, but zoos make me cry and I go out of my way to avoid them. I'm glad you were able to get these great photos, though.

Me too, that's why I didn't visit a zoo for years now.

Same for me. It's been years.
