A spring day full of small moments
Some days are not particularly spectacular or grand but are valuable because of that. Today was such a day. There were no big adventures, no huge to-do list, but just a day where everything calmly fell into place.
Finally: The Tax Return Is Done
The morning started with a task I had dreaded for weeks: the tax return. Although it was not the most exciting activity, it still felt good to finally go through the papers and check the last few things. Once everything was filled in and completed, it was time to get some fresh air.
Skipper and I went for a walk. As always, he had his ideas about how that should go. He sniffed, looked around, and thought that every cyclist should be announced loudly. Perhaps a little less relaxing for me, but he feels it is an important task for him. Still, it did not only go his way: with a few snacks in my pocket and some extra attention, I was fortunately able to bribe him now and then to remain a little calmer. Small victories!
Back home, it was time to enjoy myself. The sun was shining, the temperature was pleasant, and the garden beckoned. I put a chair in a sunny corner, picked up a book, and enjoyed the first warm day of spring. Skipper settled into his usual lookout post in the garden, from where he could observe the entire area. Everything was peaceful—except for his interpretation of a passing cyclist, of course.
While I was reading, I noticed the cheerful chirping of the birds. The garden seemed to be a gathering place for sparrows today. I could hear their busy chirping everywhere, occasionally interrupted by the more melodious sound of a finch or the soft squeak of a blue tit. I decided to grab my camera and try to capture the activity.
Unexpected Conversations
When I saw a few geese a little further away, I decided to go closer to take a picture. To my surprise, Skipper, who was waiting for me in the backyard, behaved nicely. As I focused my lens, two children curiously approached. They asked what kind of birds they were and we started talking. It was good to see that they were interested in nature, instead of just being busy with a tablet or phone. We discussed the different birds they knew and how to recognize them. It was a small, spontaneous moment, but it is precisely those kinds of things that make a day special.
After a while, I returned to the garden, looked at the photos, and concluded that this had been a ‘sparrow day’. Skipper had kept himself well-controlled with the birds but decided to focus his pent-up energy elsewhere. The passing postman was now loudly announced, and if she had taken it into her head to put mail in the mailbox here, she would at least know well in advance that Skipper and I were outside. This is not exactly how I like to see it, but there are some discussions I can’t win from him yet.
Nothing Special, Still A Good Day
And so ended a day without big plans, but with enough small moments to enjoy. There’s something special about the first days of spring—the promise of longer days, warmer evenings, and an ever-increasing amount of life in nature. Sometimes you don’t have to look any further than your backyard to enjoy it.
