Trees Are For Birds To Hide In
Rustling through the leaves, often hear chattering deep within, smaller birds do know the trees are their kingdom. Hide from the heat, feast on nectar or simply chatter at the top of their voices there is a a kite flying above flying above.
Firey little finch visits normally in the afternoon, very skittish will take to hide within the bush. Red-billed firefinch )Lagonosticta senegala) prefer thickets, woodlands and savannas, these normally feed beneath the leaves of the tree, seldom venturing far from the bush along the wall.
Awesome Brown-hooded kingfisher often lets me know sitting in the tree checking the landscape below for morsels to enjoy below, this kingfisher does not eat fish, prefers to hawk on worms or insects...
Oh the Loerie makes a noise, lets everyone know he is close but to try capture photos a near impossibility! Hidden well within the tree eating fruit, quick in movement normally out of sight. Gotcha - Purple-crested turaco!
Alas ring-necked dove (Streptopelia capicola), or Cape turtle dove or Half-collared dove is a little slow sometimes, pretty bird seen in the open that are vulnerable to black sparrowhawks and lanner falcons, not that I have ever witnessed one attacked in the garden. Dove may be close to the trees, simply not quick enough....
Tiny little White-bellied sunbird perches high early morning and late afternoons singing on high, to attract the ladies! Another have to zoom, thank goodness modern cameras have the capability of using this with a sturdy hand..
Him taking in some nectar in bush right next to the next one.... There we have it male and female!
Lady sipping from the flowers, delicious pollen she has been alerted to again late afternoon before they seek shelter for the night, in trees. She does not have the grand colour, but most definitely listens to his call.
When you hear the song change, chattering loudly, movement within the trees agitated, look above there goes a pair of Yellow-bill kites perhaps hunting together, or sharing the thermals for pleasure.
Moving at high speed...
Suddenly you realize there are two, hunting or playing together?
Judging by acrobatics it might have been a bit of both, game and hunt is on!
What did you see stepping out your door today, birds are ever on the move...
The feeder is a busy place, here to enjoy a short clip of weavers doing just that, free food!
Best things in life are free, aren't they? Cost of a small camera with loads of entertainment. Happy a happy day!

I love the trees where the birds choose it as their home, and from there they give us their songs.Good afternoon dear friend @joanstewart
What beautiful specimens visit you every day, each one owner of an incomparable beauty
Beautiful photographs
The weavers are very busy here, when I go out to unlock the gate in the morning wait to ambush me for food.
When I place the food they come in droves from surrounding trees, they had been waiting, the smaller finches come in their own time when the crowds disappear later in the day, such a joy to know they are always out there.
You were so lucky to capture that gorgeous Loerie! I've tried on numerous occasions but no such luck. Hubby managed to take a lovely pic years ago as it flew from the pawpaw tree, they are stunning in flight but almost impossible to capture, as you know.
The Kingfisher is one of my favourite birds, but then all garden birds are.
That's one thing I miss now that Poe is here😥
Loerie I have managed to capture some delightful shots in better lighting, never in flight with those dazzling red under wing feathers.
We have some feral cats pass through the garden at night, with a dog on the property they don't appear to hang about, although birds battle with snakes and cats raiding nests the population numbers appear stable.
Arthur managed to capture the Loerie in full flight on his phone camera - 2016. That giant pawpaw tree fell about 3 years ago and slightly damaged a section of the cottage roof, fortunately only broke a couple of roof tiles and bent the aluminium gutter at the corner. They were the most delicious pawpaws!
Don't even talk about snakes, I'm still terrified of them despite the odd spotting over the years!
Wow Arthur had a superb capture here, they are so fast...
Always in the trees one does have difficulty, unless they stop to feed close to home!
Pity the paw-paw tree came down feeds many in the neighbourhood one has to book on for the family, by permission of all the wildlife!
He had very fast reflexes, we were walking down to the cottage when he looked up, almost didn't get in the frame!
Yes the birds used to eat the ones at the very top, then it was the monkeys and we would pick the lower ones just before they were ripe and before the monkeys grabbed them.
How is this heat today!
Enjoy your weekend Joan, I hope you're taking a break 💕
Heat always gets the better of me, I really don't enjoy this time of year. Hiding away after loads of washing clearing out cupboard....
Fruit in garden here is much the same, guavadilla is not ripe to pick yet monkeys are testing.... Will hopefully be making juice next month once again, so refreshing! Paw-paws, banana or avocado pear are some I have avoided growing as it becomes mayhem!
Have a great day and hope you too are avoiding the harsh conditions outdoors. 🤗
I'm trying not to use the aircon too much, had an enormous water & electricity bill for December, more than double! We were busier than normal, but also with families coming, it's more cooking showering, ironing, aircon on the coldest setting blowing on high. I have to keep reminding some guests to close windows when they have it on, and to turn it off when they go out! So annoying, but, fortunately, that's mostly when it's holiday guests. I take the aircon remotes away in winter ever since seeing a Google review - 'their aircons are so nice and warm' - well, I was furious, putting it on heat!!! Our winters really don't warrant heaters!
Take it easy Joan <3
Love watching the birds around here, too. The sheer NUMBER of weavers in that video clip is pretty amazing!
The trees are definitely a blessing but it DOES become a challenge to get a clear shot.
Weavers take comfort in numbers, raise up into tree as one, then descend back down one by one, so funny watching them as they literally move up about a meter max into tree.
Thanks for visiting.
I like the prehistoric good looks of this busy bird
They do have a prehistoric look, this was taken in the open during 2022. In flight have flashy red underwing which is dazzling.
That is such a regal and majestic bird. Powerful claws too. It kind of reminds of a blue or Steller's jay. Those colours are unreal and magnificent.
Fast, flashy and stunning when you see them under sunlight... Mainly eats fruits and berries.
Wow so many weavers.
Yes I am with you Joan, watching birds is a fun pastime.

Wow I have never seen a pink bird before that is a cute litle thing
His colours are strikingly bright, she has more olive on the wings, both dinky.
is that bright colour difficult to hide from predators?
Always feeds close to protective, fast to evacuate any unusual movement.
clever!!
Red does signal danger with many insects, doubt birds, they have to hide.
ah! 👍
Such a delight to watch them birds and the weavers are so cute.🙂
Thank you again for your wonderful post!
Birds visit daily, just depends who arrives at different times of the day.
